The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 101: Pocono 400

Saturday July 28, 2018 – Pocono Raceway

Chase makes his way into her room, walking over as he immediately lets her clasp his hand.

“You didn’t need to come,” she offers as he shakes his head back in response. He knew the second practice wouldn’t have gone as planned without a visit.

“I was worried about you after Tyler told me what happened,” he replies as she sits up a little in the bed.

“I didn’t really pass out like they all claim, okay? I leaned up against the wall because….okay, I was tired and when I leaned against the wall, Tyler asked me if I was okay. I was slow responding so he got Rudy’s attention and next thing, I’m here.”

“Dehydrated again?” She slowly nods her head as she glances up at the IV.

“They ran a couple more tests or whatever to make sure it’s stomach virus and nothing something else – like pregnant, or food poisoning. Everything came back clean so we’re stuck with it being a torturous stream and my body barely able to handle it.” He brushes the small bit of hair out of her face.

“That’s because you’re not following what everybody told you, and focusing on yourself. You should’ve been in bed still, catching up on sleep, sipping Gatorades, looking after yourself. Let this weekend go…” She then lets out a sigh as she glances down at the bed.

“I guess I have no choice now, huh? Doctors won’t clear me due to the incident as they’re worried about my hydration levels and conce-”

“I don’t blame them, as I would be as well.” She then looks over at him.

“I can handle driving while I’m sick. It seems nobody understands how strong I am.” Chase lets out a sigh as he looks into her eyes.

“Don’t ever let anybody question your strength. We all know how strong you are, how hard you push, how determined you feel. We also know your limits, and today is one of those. NASCAR has given you a waiver so take it, embrace it, and let yourself get better. You always tell me to take care of myself. Well, now I’m telling you to do the same.”

“But I know I have a winning truck for today. You saw how quick we were in practi-”

“You’ll have many more chances to win races this year, next year, and for many years to come. But you need to weather this storm first, so it’s time to focus on you and get better.” He then kisses her forehead. “Did they say how long you have to stay for?”

“They want to make sure my hydration levels are steady, that I can keep the fluids somewhat in my system, and I’m not feeling faint anymore. I think I have a room reserved for the afternoon, unfortunately.” Chase then glances down at the chair, shifting a little.

“Then I guess I have a seat reserved here for the afterno-”

“Uhh, you have a final practice to run so I suggest you get your ass out there and run it.” He then looks at her surprised. “What? Don’t let my sickness change your schedule. I can take plenty care of myself here while you go make circles. If I’m giving up my damn weekend, then you better have a car underneath you that can win tomorrow. Besides, a trophy would be a nice get well present.” Chase couldn’t help but smile.

“I’ll do the best that I can, but I can’t make any promises.” She nods her head, accepting, as it was better than nothing. That said, she knew how strong Hendrick Motorsports was at Pocono, and she knew that the No. 9 team had been on a upswing so her chances looked good. “I love you, and I hope you feel. I hate to see you sick.”

“I hate being sick. I get sick looking at my own vomit.” He shakes his head as he knew that wasn’t a pretty sight.

“You’ll be feeling better soon….” He gives her one final kiss before heading off for final practice, as she had instructed him to do so.

Chase climbs out of the car, following the final practice run of the day, before walking over to the crew chief.

“Better or worse?” Alan questions as he looks over at his driver.

“About the same?” Chase replies back as Alan lets out a sigh. He could only glance at the board and see they were 10th on the speed chart for the second session in a row.

“The good news is we’re consistent so we should be fine on the long runs tomorrow. The bad news is that we’re still not where we need to be to find that next step and run in the top-five.” Chase nods his head in agreement as Alan thinks it over. “I could try something for time trials, but then it may not work. Whatever we do for qualifying, we have to leave in the for the race.”

“So what if we leave it, start the race solidly, and go from there?” Alan nods his head, accepting, as it seemed like a decent plan.

“Alright, it’s settled. You can go back to taking care of your girl – as long as you don’t get sick on me.” Chase places a hand on Alan’s shoulder.

“Trust me, I’m fine.” Alan glances over at him with a small smile.

“It’s been a while since you could say that and I would absolutely believe you. Keep doing what you’re doing, kid.” Alan then walks away notes in hand as Chase makes his way out of the garage, back to the care center to see Sarina.

Thankfully rehydrated with some more fluids, Sarina was released from the care center, with Chase taking her back to the motorcoach immediately. The pair curled up together, taking in the truck race on the TV there despite Sarina’s pleas to go sit on the pit box.

The race only made the afternoon harder for her to handle as Erik Jones drove her truck from last in the field to sixth by the end of the first stage, before battling the rest of the race with Kyle for the win. Ultimately, the boss won, though, with Erik in second.

Cup qualifying was set to follow, and once again Sarina expressed the want to join Chase out on pit road. However, finally beginning to realize just how sick she was, she settled in under the blankets with a couple Gatorade bottles on the night table as he headed out for the session.

The plan to go with a solid set-up to not mess up things allowed them to lock down the 11th starting spot for the race tomorrow. It wasn’t spectacular, but certainly they could work with it.

Sunday July 29, 2018 – Pocono Raceway

“Thank you for spending the race with me,” Sarina says as she pulls the blanket even more snuggly around herself, trying to get comfortable and settled in. it was going to be odd to be at the track with Chase, yet watching the race from the motorcoach rather than the pit box.

“Are you kidding me?!?” Lindsay asks immediately as she looks over. “I wasn’t going to make you suffer watching this alone.” Sarina then returns the gaze back to her best friend.

“I just don’t want you to get sick with that little one…” Lindsay glances down at her own stomach, seeing at it was ever-growing, giving it a little rub.

“That’s why we’re not real close to each other. Besides, Ryan is already a little overprotective.” Sarina couldn’t help but chuckle as they each got comfortable on the couches.

The race started off solidly as Chase immediately made his way forward to the front.

“Stage winner,” Eddie D’Hondt says over the radio at the end of the first stage. While watching the race broadcast, Sarina had loaded NASCAR.com’s raceview so she could listen to Chase’s audio. It wouldn’t be the same watching a race otherwise. “Good work, bud. Two weeks in a row. I’m starting to like this.” She couldn’t help but agree with the spotter as the success was great to see.

The second stage started off just as strongly with Chase running up front throughout, but ultimately crossing the finish line in second behind Kevin Harvick.

“He backs up pretty much every corner, gets to the bottom, and stays there,” Alan reports over the radio which Sarina had to agree via what she saw on the screen before her. “(He) has a lot of grip in his car.”

“The grip meter is an understatement – that’s for sure,” Chase replies, earning a nod of approval from both Sarina and Lindsay.

“He makes a pretty wide arc off of the wall,” Eddie adds in as well as Sarina simply smiles.

Following the final round of pit stops, Chase continued to run up front, running as high as third before fading back a bit.

“Holy shit!!” Lindsay lets out as the No. 43 Chevrolet of Darrell Wallace slams the wall.

“Fuck!” Sarina adds as they both sit there stunned. The nerves stayed until the window net came down on the car, with Bubba climbing out shortly after to the sigh of relief.

“That was insane!” Sarina nods her head in agreement.

“If there’s a track that I never want to lose my brakes going into a corner, it’s here because the result is just insanity beyond other tracks it seems. Look at Gordon’s wreck a couple years ago!”

The girls settle in for the final run to the checkered, watching as Chase drops back to fifth. He would then make a big save down the backstretch – which caused Sarina to jump out of her skin a little – before crossing the line in seventh when it was said and done.

“I don’t even know why some race tracks seem to be more suitable for what we have, and some don’t,” Chase tells the media afterwards. “We think we’re better as a whole, but I think we still have some work to do.”

Tuesday July 31, 2018 – Pocono Raceway

Chase smiles as he walks over to Cale and Emma, giving them each a hug.

“Congratulations,” he tells them both after the ceremony. “Make sure you take care of her.”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” Cale offers as he wraps an arm around Emma’s shoulders.

“I also bet that you’re having a boy.” Emma just smiles back in return as she glances up at Cale.

“That’s what I told him, but he told me otherwise. We’ll see when we reveal it later.” She then glances around, before focusing back on Chase. “Where’s Sarina?”

“She’s at home,” Chase answers. “She was still not feeling all the way better yet so she told me that she was skipping the wedding, but sends her blessings.” Emma nods her head, accepting, already forming another theory in her head.

“She also trying to avoid seeing Erin?” Chase glances over to where Erin was talking with someone, before looking back at Emma.

“They talked at Eldora and things are straightened ou-”

“I also talked to my sister Chase, and I know her honest opinion of Sarina as of right now.” Chase bit his lip, knowing that probably didn’t come out smoothly.

“Emma, I know as she told me, but Sarina has no idea. Her skipping the wedding has nothing to do with that, I promise you.” Emma wanted to simply believe him to make things simple, but couldn’t quite do that.

“It doesn’t matter to me either way as this is my night – well, Cale’s too, and we’re set to celebrate our love with those who are close to us. But know that I don’t take lightly to people playing around with my sister’s fee-”

“The kiss was a total accide-”

“I don’t care the circumstances, reasons, whatever. Just remember what I told you. I will kick your ass if I have to. Just ask Ryan.” Emma then walks away as Cale glances between the pair surprised.

“I’m going to say that’s the pregnancy hormones kicking in,” Cale offers as Chase just grins a little.

“I’d like to believe you there, but I’ve known her a long time to know better,” Chase comments as he places a hand on Cale’s shoulder. “You found a gem in her, and I’m happy for you. Don’t screw it up.”

Chase then walks away, set to go find Ryan and Lindsay as he promised he’d catch up with them both.

The rest of the night ultimately would go smoothly, capping off with the gender reveal and Chase guessed it right as Emma and Cale were expecting a boy.

“Try topping that reveal,” Chase offers as he glances over at Ryan and Lindsay.

“We actually talked about waiting until she has the baby to see what it is,” Ryan comments as Chase looks over surprised.

“Are you sure your sisters are going to let you away with that? I’d expect them to want to know so they can shop and spoil the baby, and plan the baby shower.” Ryan chuckles as he had heard rumblings from both already about those plans.

“They have Emma’s boy to spoil. That should keep them occupied for awhile.”

Friday August 3, 2018 – Watkin’s Glen International

“What are you looking at?” Chase questions as the pair of them relax in the transporter together.

“White flowers, or light blue flowers?” She asks as she flips between the images.

“Light blue. The snow will have so much white that you want something to compliment it.” She then looks over surprised as he puts his arm around her. “You learn those things doing photo shoots. Are you almost done planning for the wedding?”

“Venue, decorations, and now flowers – I say guest list and then finding the perfect dress.” He smiles as he looks into her eyes.

“I don’t care what you wear as you’ll look beautiful no matter what.” He then leans in, lightly kissing her lips. “Guest list – close friends and family only. That should be easy..”

“I just hope that things go smoothly when it comes to that.” She then sets her phone down. “I heard from Lindsay that Emma wasn’t pleased that I wasn’t there, blaming it on Eri-”

“I talked to Emma about it, and whether she agreed or not, who knows. But she knows from me that you were sick and she saw it on the weekend. She’s just set to let it go.” Sarina lets out a chuckle.

“Chase, I haven’t known them as long as you know, but I know how protective Emma can be from Lindsay.” Chase lets out a sigh.

“So Emma threatened to kick my ass should something else happen – that’s normal. Like you told me last week, there’s nothing to worry about because we love each other.” He then intertwines his fingers with hers. “Nobody is going to change that, ever.”

“I know…” She then lays her head against him. “Even if the fans want to start rumors and little hashtag battles.”

“Hashtag battles?” She then picks her phone back up, going into Twitter as she loads a poll. “Sarell or Charina? We have a couple hashtag now?” She chuckles, nodding her head. “I guess Sarase didn’t sound as good. Did you vote?”

“Uh no, I don’t want them to realize I’m stalking their crazy asses.” He then laughs as he glances through some of the tweets. “But you have to admit, there’s some entertaining stuff in there….”

“You certainly have gathered a following.” He then hands the phone back to her.

“It still surprises me, sometimes. I still can’t believe my decision to go down main street and grab a drink when we landed because I wanted to go to my favorite smoothie shop since I had been missing it resulted in paparazzi.” She then pulls up the photo they took. “Like, that’s insane. You don’t even have that unless you’re downtown New York.”

“At least they took an adorable photo of you…” She then shakes her head. “But I also heard they were in town due to Ariana Grande or something, so maybe they mistook you at first. Not that I could understand why because you’re so much more beautiful.”

“Careful Chase, too much of the flirting and we may get distracted. I have practice soon….” Chase nods his head, remembering as he rubs her shoulders. With the trucks being off, she had decided to run the K&N Series race to get some more road course experience.

“Are you sure you’re feeling up to it?” She then glances back at him surprised.

“Are you going to be overprotective for the months to come because of one sick weekend?”

“Someone has to take care of you…” He then kisses her cheek, causing her to turn back and face him, with their lips meeting together.

“We take care of each other, always….” She then wraps her arms around him as their lips find each other’s once again, with his hands slipping underneath the back of her shirt. “Chas-”

“You need to get changed anyway….”

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 100: Pocono Sickness

Tuesday July 24, 2018 – North Carolina

Sarina walks into the bedsroom, pulling her shirt off as she glances over at Chase.

“What are you reading?” She asks, noticing his eyes don’t leave his phone at all.

“Casey’s press release,” he answers as she looks over slightly confused. She then flops down in the bed beside him, glancing at his phone. “Haven’t you heard? Casey Roderick is finally getting a chance to run an XFINITY race.” She then places her hand on his leg.

“I bet you set that up…” Chase glances away as she just laughs. “It’s sweet, actually. Look at you, already giving back…”

“He’s one of the talented drivers in late models and I’ve always wanted to see what he could do at this level with the right funding. When Mike Beam mentioned having an opening for Iowa, I went all in.” He also smiles, knowing that there was another announcement coming.

“Didn’t you and Casey work together at one point?” Chase nods his head.

“We were teammates actually. I learned a lot from him. Now we’ll see what he can do.” He then switches screen on his phone. “It’ll be interesting to see everybody’s reaction to the other announcement.”

“There’s another announcement? Please tell me that you got Bubba Pollard a chance, too.” Chase then gives her a slightly impressed grin.

“Bubba Pollard? I thought you got off of his high horse a long time ago.” She then shakes her head no.

“That boy is still winning races across the country. Somebody has to pick up the phone soon.” Chase actually had to admit that he hoped she was right as that’d be another fun driver to watch get a chance.

“Bubba isn’t the driver for the announcement, though. They had an opening for Road America, and I sort of threw my dad’s name out there.” Sarina’s jaw drops in shock. “The more shocking part is Mike Beam took that seriously, and then asked Dad and he agreed.”

“So your dad is running Road America at the end of this month?” Chase slowly nods his head yes. “Woah, okay, that’s kind of cool. I almost wish that I was off that weekend so I could be there in person to watch that.” Chase lets out a sigh as he knew what was coming next. “So I’m guessing you’re not coming to Canada with me then…”

“I am coming for the race on Sunday, but I will not be there on Satur-”

“And we’re not doing CN Tower dinner like we had planned, either.” She then takes a calming deep breath as she couldn’t help but feel disappointed in seeing their own plans spoiled. However, she also knew what this announcement meant. “It’s okay. We can do the dinner another time as you deserve to be there with your dad. I think it’s pretty cool that he’s coming back after all of this time. I think he’ll surprise people. I mean, he surprised me with how well he ran the TransAm race at Road Atlanta.”

“I appreciate your understanding.” He then leans over, giving her a kiss. “I also want you to let me know if Erin gives you an trouble.”

“You saw the conversation on Wednes-”

“We crossed paths in the garage this past weekend, and she shared some thoughts in that she’s totally not all set on you as she said, yet, due to our past together. I told her that you had changed and there’s nothing to worry about, but she wasn’t totally ready for you to have it.” Sarina slowly nods her head, understandingly. “But you have nothing to worry about in regards to me and her-”

“You don’t need to tell me twice, Chase. I know we’re committed to this together…” She then places her hand on top of his. “This lovely ring, the heart on my bracelet, and every time we spend together says it by itself. Let’s just live our lives and forget about the reassurances, okay? We understand where we each other is with regards to each other, and our friends, and that’s what matters.”

“You make it sound so easy…” She then grins as she scoots closer to him.

“…because it is that easy when I have lips like yours to taste each night.” She then slowly kisses his lips.

Friday July 27, 2018 – Pocono Raceway

Sarina makes her way into the garage area, taking a deep breath as she stops and leans back against the wall.

“What are you doing here?” Rudy immediately questions as he looks over at his young driver.

“I’m here, ready to wor-” She starts slowly as he shakes his head.

“Practice was cancelled due to weather. I texted both you and Chase hoping that you’d stay in the motorcoach and sleep some considering how sick you are. Instead, you’re standing before me. Why do I bother?”

“Getting in the groove, working on the truck, doing everything as I should, it’ll make me feel better…” Rudy just smiles as he looks over, almost set to roll his eyes, or perhaps even punch her.

“Do you know how many drivers have told me that? You should be taking care of yourself!”

She lets out a sigh as she was hoping to not get a lecture once in the garage area. Sometime Thursday, she had gotten a real pain in her stomach, which turned into her throwing up. Since then, she had been only able to keep down a little bit of toast and rice, with the vomiting happening on a constant basis.

Despite being sick, though, she was determined to race this weekend.

“Besides, it’s a distraction from those papers…” Rudy glances over a little confused as she lets out a sigh. “Now that two doctors have said I wouldn’t be able to carry a baby to full term, there’s options to look over and decide. I just want to scream when I look at them.”

“Then why are you bothering with them?” Rudy questions. “What part of take care of yourself, get sleep, drink, relax do you not understand lady?” She then lets out a sigh. “Don’t tell me that Chase is forcing the pape-”

“He’s telling the same thin-”

“So how about you listen for a change, please?” Rudy walks over, wrapping an arm around her shoulder as he hands her a bottle of Gatorade. “We’re just trying to take care of you. We love you, hate to see you sick, and want you to get better.” She then glances over with a small smirk.

“You actually love me?” He immediately want to kick himself in the ass for those words.

“Underneath this hard exterior, away from all of your other stupid shit at times, yes Sarina, I love you and care about you. I consider you a friend and want to see you doing well.” She smiles as she twists the top off the bottle, downing it immediately.

“See, I knew you were just a big teddy bear…” Rudy rolls his eyes as he walks away, going back over notes knowing down to just one practice session, they’d need to have all their ducks in a row.

Chase makes his way up through the No. 18 hauler, listening against the lounge door to make sure he wasn’t interrupting something before slipping inside.

“Nice job leading prac-” he starts, as planned, since she had led the session. It had been a good day as his girl had led truck practice, while Casey Roderick led XFINITY practice at Iowa Speedway.

“Why weren’t you here sooner?” Rudy immediately cuts him off. “I expected to see your ass here to take your fiancé back to the motorcoach so she could sleep and rest being as sick as she is. Where have you been mister?” Both Chase and Sarina look over at Rudy surprised.

“I was busy, but I came as soon as I got done the appearance…” Rudy shakes his head as he glances over at Sarina, who was curled up on the couch.

“Well since you’re finally here, please do the righteous duty of taking care of this lovely lady.” Chase didn’t need to be told twice as he walks over, brushing her hair out of her face.

“Are you feeling any better?” She slowly shakes her head no, before grabbing the bucket that was on the floor by the couch, throwing up again. “Sweetheart…”

“I suggested that she go to the care center as they may be able to help her. You can tell that she’s a little dehydrated…” Chase nods his head in agreement.

“Rudy has a good idea, sweetheart.” She shakes her head no. “No? I think he does, though.”

“I’m fine,” she says as she slowly sits up. “I just want to go back and lay down, please…” She leans against Chase as he rubs her back.

“I’d rather you go to the care center, though,” he tells her before looking down into her eyes. “Do you remember what you told me at Chicagoland? The fact that you wanted me to go get checked over so you would know that I was okay, and get the help I needed if necessary. Remember how you said it would make you feel better to know that I was okay? Now I’m asking you to please do it for me, please….”

She then slowly stands up, nodding her head in agreement, as they make their way through the trailer together.

It was a short ride over to the care center on the pit cart, where they took her inside immediately. As both Rudy and Chase predicted, she was pretty dehydrated, resulting in them giving her fluids immediately. Summing up her continued vomiting to a stomach flu going around, they also gave her some gravol to hopefully lessen the vomiting.

“Remember to stick to the brat diet,” the nurse says once she leaves the room. They weren’t releasing her yet, but it was good advice for later on.

“Did she just call me what I thought she did?” Sarina asks as Chase just chuckles. “It’s not funny!”

“Brat Diet – banana, rice, applesauce and toast,” Chase answers as he chuckles once again. “It’s the four items that are easiest on your stomach while sick and are known to bind things up to make it harder for it to come up stream.” She then gives him a little puzzled look. “My mom always made me follow it if I was even just a little sick. It works so listen, please…”

“Yes, Dr. Elliott..” He just rolls his eyes as he sits back in the chair.

“Once you get out of here, we’re going back to the motorcoach and you’re going straight to bed. I’ll deliver you food and drink, and cuddles of course.” She couldn’t help but smile in response as she lets her fingers interlock with his.

“Thank you for convincing me to come…” He glances over with a small smile as it was nice to see some of the color back in her face.

Saturday July 28, 2018 – Pocono Raceway

Chase walks into the garage area, fixing his firesuit one last time.

“Considering you were up late last night, you look ready to go this morning,” Jordan comments as he places the gloves in the car with the helmet. “Don’t play dumb, but I saw you online last night. Getting in another round of Fortnite?” Chase then shakes his head.

“That’s what you were doing,” Chase says as he stops at the car. “That’s the only way that you could tell that I was online last night. Meanwhile, I was watching The Ranch off Netflix while cuddling Sarina as she tried to get to sleep. But hey, good try man…” Jordan then gives him the once over.

“So you haven’t caught the bug, right?” Chase slowly shakes his head no. “Please give me warning if you do because I don’t want it.” Chase knew the answer immediately.

“Trust me, I don’t plan on catching that thing…” Jordan then leans over the roof as Chase gets set to climb in.

“That bad, huh?” Chase nods his head before climbing in the car. “Is she feeling any better today?”

“Nope as she threw up breakfast about a half hour after eating, and fell back asleep just before I left for practice.” Jordan shakes his head as he felt terrible before kneeling down, set to help him buckle in if needed.

“It feels solid, but we just need a little more,” Chase comments after ending the first practice sitting 10th on the speed chart. “If you give me something more to work with in turn two, I should be fine as we’re rolling three good.”

“What about turn one?” Alan wonders, earning a shaky glance from his driver. “If you can live with that, I’ll work on the other two corners.”

“Chase?” A voice interrupts them as Chase looks through the garage to see Tyler Kieper off Sarina’s team standing there. “Rudy told me to come find yo-”

“What’s going on?” Chase questions, knowing if Rudy sent a crew member to get him during qualifying that something serious was up.

“Sarina is at the care center. She’s not being cleared to run today due to being sick as Erik Jones is runn-”

“How is she?” Chase could worry about the small minor details later as there was only one thing on his mind.

“She’s pretty dehydrated. She just about passed out on pit road during qualifying. Rudy took her back to the car center on the golf cart.” Chase gives Alan a quick glance and Alan simply nods.

“Go on,” the crew chief instructs. “I have enough to work on something for session two.”

Chase then makes his way through the garage stall, headed directly to the care center to see how she was.

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 99: Casino Resort 301

Friday July 21, 2018 – New Hampshire

After talking over the last run during practice with Alan, Chase makes his way over to the 88 garage stall next door.

“How’s your car feel?” He asks, catching his teammate’s attention.

“Fighting tight through the ends,” Alex answers as he glances up at the speed charts. “Well, at least we’re all right together.” Chase had ended the session in 12th, with Alex sitting eighth.

“Look at Jimmie and explain that to me.” Alex glances up the sheet, seeing Jimmie sitting sixth.

“Cause he’s seven-time. Should I waltz over to Grandpa and ask him his secret?” Chase chuckles at the nickname that Alex and William had been using for Jimmie all season long.

“I was tight going into the corner, but Alan says if I take a bit of that set-up Jimmie has, I should be good for qualifying. I guess it’s try and see, right?” Alan nods his head.

“Greg says that he thinks a tweak in air pressure is all that I need to be right there. Guess we’ll see…” Chase then lets out a sigh as Alex looks down at the toolbox. “So what’s this envelope addressed to you anyway?” Chase instantly looks over, a little intrigued that the envelope was sitting there. However, seeing Alan’s clipboard with it, he figured it might have got stuck to it when the crew chief came over to speak with Greg.

“Paternity results from the courts for Alison.” Alex keeps his eyes on the envelope, glancing it over.

“Oh right, there’s a chance that she may be pregnant with your kid…” Chase slowly nods his head. “So you got the results that you’ve been waiting for and yet you haven’t opened them? If it was me, I would get this off of my conscious immediately and rip it by the seams.”

“I’d rather wait in case I need some time to process it.” Alex glances over a little confused.

“I thought there was no chance that she was pregna-”

“I’m beginning to wonder if it happened, and I just tried to block it out.” Alex lets out a sigh.

“Oh man…” Alex’s eyes immediately find their way back to the envelope. “I still say that you should just get it over with.” Alex begins to run his finger along the seam, though Chase places his hand on top.

“My envelope, my rules. Leave it alone, please.” Chase snatches the envelope as Alex just looks on, notably concerned based on his teammate’s reaction.

“Alright, alright, I’m sorry man. But can I give you a piece of advice? I wouldn’t leave that lying around the garage. Someone could easily pick it up, snatch the results away, do whatever they want. You also leave the door open for someone to switch the resu-”

“Alison is locked awa-”

“She could blackmail or pay someone, Chase. My advice would be to get someone to take that back to your hauler, and lock it up in a drawer with key until you’re ready to reveal the details. That’s just me, though…” Chase glances down at the envelope, before looking back at his teammate.

“Thanks for the advice.” Chase then heads off, envelope in hand, as Alex watches on.

“Yeah – 10th best,” Chase tells the reporter. “It’s been kind of the status quo I feel like lately. Just trying to get a little better. The consistency has certainly been better, I feel like, but not consistently where we want to be.”

He then walks back over to the pit wall, having a seat as he thinks over the qualifying run. It was better than they had practiced – speed-wise and feeling. However, it still wasn’t where they wanted to be as running there wasn’t winning races, and that was the ultimate goal. Alan’s work was paying off slowly, but they still needed a little more and he wasn’t settling until they got that.

After thinking it over, he heads back to the hauler, making his way to the lounge in the back. Alan and Josh were already there, going over notes on the laptop. He grabs a drink, sitting down beside them as he stares at the envelope on the table. Sarina slowly makes her way inside, sitting down beside, placing a hand on his leg.

“Look at those two smarties,” she starts, catching the attention of Josh and Alan. “They’ll figure it out..” Chase nods, knowing that they would; he wouldn’t want to work with anybody else. However, his mind was instead consumed by the package before him. “Is that what I think it is?”

“Paternity results delivered directly by a court official to the garage area,” he says as he picks up the envelope. “Everything that I’ve been questioning for months is right in here.” Sarina checks the seam, surprised to see it wasn’t broken.

“So what are you waiting for?” He then flips it over, taking a deep breath.

“I’ve been stuck on the fact that she’s not pregnant with my kid. What if this confirms her theory?” Sarina knew that was a possibility, but stuck to the belief that it wasn’t. Sure, she didn’t know what to believe initially due to how she found out the news and the fact that Chase wasn’t the most forthcoming. However, hearing what he had to say since, she was now ready to believe this was just another one of Alison’s games.

“Then we’ll deal with it accordingly, okay? We’ll look at the next steps to take and figure out where to go from here. No matter what, you’ve got myself, Alan, Josh, Jordan, your parents, Ryan, everybody. We can get through anything.” She then runs her finger along the edge. “I’d rather you open it and stop torturing yourself by letting her run your life.”

“I’m sorry. I just don’t know where to go with it sometimes….” She then rubs his shoulders.

“You don’t need to apologize, Chase. I get it. I really do, all of the feelings are understandable after everything. That’s why we’re all glad that you’re taking the steps necessary. The next step, though, is opening this.”

Chase knew that she was right as putting it off continually was getting them nowhere as he ran his finger along the edge of the envelope, finally breaking the seam that sealed it together. He opens the envelope, looking inside to see a white piece of paper.

“Who knew a simple white piece of paper could determine the rest of your life,” he offers as he slides the piece of paper out, blank side facing up. All it took now was flipping over the paper and he would have the results he wanted. However, he couldn’t bring himself to do it, just looking at it with a sigh.

“Can I look?” Josh interrupts as he reaches over, but Alan smacks his hand.

“This is for Chase to handle….” Alan tries to convince the car chief as Josh keeps his eyes focused on Chase.

“I’ve wanted to be Maury, though.”

“You’ve watched Maury?!?” Alan, Sarina, and Chase all say together at the same time.

“Hey now, there’s some good drama sometimes,” Josh tries to defend himself as a series of laughs break out.

“Oh what the heck?” Chase says as he tosses it over to the car chief. “I might as well let someone have some fun out of this.” Josh picks up the piece of paper, flipping it over to reveal the news they all wanted to see. Alan immediately smiles as he glances over the car chief’s shoulder.

“Alan, you would never make a good show assistant,” Sarina comments, catching the grin herself as she begins to smile a little.

“William Clyde Elliott, you are not the father of Ms. Alison Reynolds’ baby as your DNA does not match the sample given,” Josh reads out loud before handing the piece of paper back to Chase.

“Your instincts were right all along,” Alan offers as Sarina pulls him close.

Chase lets out a large sigh as he reads it for himself, feeling as though the weight had been lifted off his shoulders. It was only one step, but it was the beginning of moving further away from what happened with Alison and along with his own life.

“Well?” Sarina questions, noticing the silence from Chase as he glances over with a smile.

“It’s nice to have the proof,” he comments as he stares back at the sheet. “It’s nice to know that I was right all along. She just tried to play me, and she did a good job because I was beginning to fall for her tricks.” He then holds the sheet up in the air. “Now, I’m ready to move forward.” He goes to tear it in half, but Sarina grabs his hands. “What?”

“Keep it for those who want to say you’re full of shit…” He didn’t really care what others thought, but it wasn’t worth arguing over as he slipped it back in the envelope. He then took out his phone, texting all of those who had wondered close to him the results.

Saturday July 22, 2018 – New Hampshire

Chase walks over to his teammate, leaning his head in the window following the final run of the pair of practices that he would get before Sunday’s race.

“Alright, spill,” he starts, catching Jimmie’s attention as he was ready for some earth-shattering request. “What’s the secret to getting around this place?”

“Roll in, turn left, come off like a tiger,” Jimmie says, repeating the same advice that he had stated earlier in the weekend. Chase just lets out a sigh.

“There’s got to be more than that…” Jimmie then glances at the computer screen before him in the car, scrolling through to see Chase was 16th and 20th in the pair of sessions.

“Have you looked over throttle and brake trace to see if you’re braking at the right spots?” Chase nods his head, having gone over those screens following the first practice.

“To be honest, it felt decent through the session, except for being a little tight. But yet, here I am once again, still mid-pack.” Jimmie flips over to the throttle trace screens and sees how they compare.

“Once Alan tweaks it a little, I think you’ll be fine as you’re doing what I told you.” Chase wanted to believe that, but still wasn’t feeling totally convinced.

“Even if the handling was way out to left field through the middle of the run?” Jimmie glances over, nodding his head.

“You at least know what not to do then, right? Look, you guys are making progress and you’re figuring out the track. Given what I’m seeing, you should be just fine tomorrow. You always figure it out. Stop being so hard on yourself for once.” Chase lets out a sigh as he stands up.

“I can’t help it, man. I want to be running better..” He goes to walk away, when Jimmie grabs his hand to stop him.

“It’ll come. We’ve made considerable progress compared to where we began the season to where we are now. It’ll keep coming as these guys are too smart to not let it happen. You’ll get to running where you want to be so just relax, roll with it, and stay focused. Also, remember what we talked about before the season. Don’t get yourself burnt out too early.” Chase nods his head, running the advice through his head.

He then walks away, satisfied with the conversation even if it got him nowhere, ready to relax the rest of the night. He knew there was going to be a good XFINITY series race on-track, and there was nothing more relaxing than sitting up in the stands watching like the good ‘ol days. Hey, maybe he’d pick up something that he could use tomorrow.

He makes his way through the garage, surprised when he sees a familiar brunette before him.

“I thought you would’ve ran off the dirt track with Emma and your dad,” he offers as Erin just chuckles back in response.

“I love my guys, but I needed to catch-up with everyone,” Erin comments as she places a hand on his shoulder. “It’s nice to hear that you got the news you wanted. See, I told you to trust your instincts. Now that’s something that you don’t need to worry about with her moving forward.” Chase slowly nods his head, accepting.

“I was almost dreading meetings about what would happen if I was the fath-”

“Don’t even let those thoughts enter your mind, Chase. Don’t give her the power to control your thoughts. Focus on yourself, your future, and what you have ahead. Focus on finding the answers you need to move forward. You deserve every bit of happiness that you can get, so focus on that.” He then glances into her eyes.

“Thanks, and I’m trying…” She then smiles back in response.

“I know you are, but I also know how you try and mask everything awa-”

“I do not do tha-”

“Who put off going to therapy? Who pretended that things weren’t as messy before with Sarina when they were a disaster?” The grin then fades from his face. “Look, I’m not ready to let go how much she hurt you the-”

“It wasn’t her fau-”

“Her brother was behind it, and certainly deserves the blame. However, she still made decisions of her own that were questionable at best. I saw the pain they caused you. I held you one of those nights that you cried. I’m not about to forget tha-”

“I thought you said you were willing to accept Sarina and I being together, though.” Erin takes a careful deep breath, knowing that she was going along thin waters. However, she knew their friendship could withstand that.

“If you’re happy, then I’m willing to accept as I certainly see the potential in her to be amazing. I also see the happiness when you’re together. However, I will be the first person there to pick up the pieces, and make sure it’s the last time if something happens again. Like I told you, I have your back.” Chase places a hand on her shoulder.

“I know you do, and I appreciate that. However, you need to lay off a little, please. When I say that Sarina has changed, I mean it.” Erin glances over across the garage, seeing Sarina playing with Brexton, before looking back to Chase.

“As I’m spending time here with you, I’m seeing that. As I see more of it, then certainly I’m willing to back right off and forget. But it’s going to take time…” Chase wanted to argue back once again, but bit his tongue. He realized it was the same speech his mother had, and he knew how that turned out.

“Okay, I understand. Just please don’t get too much up in her face about it.” Erin smiles a little.

“You saw how we were at Eldora together, right? That should tell you enough. I’ll see you later.” Erin then heads off as Chase takes a deep breath, letting everything process through as he walks through the garage, catching up with Sarina and Brexton.

Sunday July 23, 2018 – New Hampshire

Following a lengthy rain delay, the race got started and there was speed in the No. 9 NAPA Chevrolet right away as Chase began to make his way forward, finishing the first stage in the runner-up spot.

He would get a good restart to start the second stage, keeping himself second right behind Martin Truex Jr.

“Easy there boy….” Sarina says quietly as he slid up across Kyle Busch’s nose. She knew that wasn’t something that Kyle would take lightly too, and was probably already complaining about on his radio.

As the stage got into the second half, Chase began to catch up to Martin Truex Jr. as they got into lap traffic

“Holy hello fuck!” Sarina lets out as he goes four-wide, splitting the two lap cars with Martin to take the lead with 19 laps to go. “Easy boy, easy – but holy fuck that was stunning!” Josh could only chuckle as he glanced over his shoulder back at her, patting her leg.

Chase would lead the rest of the way, scoring the stage victory. Unfortunately, the pit stop sequence didn’t totally go in their favor as they lost a spot.

Restarting from the second spot, Chase ran solidly there, clicking off laps as he kept himself in position.

“I got a bit of a vibration,” Chase reports over the radio with 100 laps to go, sending the team into a bit of a fury. “Are my brakes hot?”

“I can’t tell man,” Alan replies as Josh stands up immediately. “Sending someone to check in the corner.”

Josh climbs down off the steps as Sarina turns the key on the golf kart.

“Hold on boy,” she tells him as she immediately puts it in drive, making their way quickly through the infield and down to the corner. Josh takes a close look at the NAPA Chevrolet goes through the corner, shaking his head no, before climbing back on the golf cart. He was barely on, grabbing the bar as she took off back up to their pit.

“I can see why you’re a driver,” he comments as she just chuckles. He makes his way back on the box, shaking his head no to Alan.

“No color,” Alan reports back to Chase over the radio.

Whether due to brakes or something else, the other concern was surrounding handling and that affected them as he slipped back to fourth. The final pit stop was then a little slow, causing him to lose two more spots to sixth. He would make one of them back up, crossing the line in fifth.

“Considering where we started the weekend, I’ll take it,” Sarina comments as she gives Alan and Josh a high-five. “It’s progress. Keep that coming and you’ll find your win.”

“I like your vote of confidence,” Alan replies with a smile, before looking at Josh. “Maybe we should’ve made an adjustment the last run there….”

“He said he was comfortable so I went with your theory, but the track was changing, too,” Josh offers as Alan glances at his notes. “Progress, man, progress…”

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 98: Eldora Dirt Derby

Wednesday July 18, 2018 – Eldora Speedway

Logan Seavey walks up to Todd Gilliland, as the pair watch truck series qualifying.

“Feeling confident for the pole?” Todd questions, without even glancing over at his young teammate.

“Should be fast,” Logan answers as he leans up against the fence. “How about you?”

“Still trying to get a little comfortable, but I think I’ve got something to work with.” Todd then watches as Sarina comes on track for her qualifying lap. “This’ll be interesting. She didn’t look happy after practice.”

“She’s still trying to figure out the balance between swinging it sideways enough for speed. I gave her a couple tips. She isn’t too bad to look at either.” Todd then glances over a little intrigued. “What? Can’t I compliment our teammate on her good looks?”

“I’m not going to argue.” Todd had a couple other  reserved opinions, but kept those to himself for the sake of the team.

“I mean, I can’t help but stare when she asks me ou-”

“Woah, wait, what? She asked you out?” Logan then looks over, nodding his head.

“She said that maybe we could hang out later. Last I checked, that normally leads into a date.” Todd then chuckled a little as he glanced at the speed chart.

“You do realize that she’s dating Chase Elliott, right?” Logan then looks over slightly puzzled. “Oh lawdy…”

“So maybe I did hear that. I also heard that she was hanging out with Christopher, which seemed strange due to Morgan. I mean, those two are always together.” Todd slowly nods his head as he lets out a sigh.

“Welcome to the media spinning everything. Morgan and Christopher are together as always. Christopher and Sarina are just best friends. Chase and Erin Blaney are just best friends as I’m sure you know her as well. But, Sarina and Chase are engaged. I don’t think she was asking you out on a date, but good try.” Todd then walks away as Logan thinks it over.

“Oh Logan, what did you do?” Even knowing he screwed up himself, he couldn’t help but turn around and watch as she climbed out of the truck. She was certainly a beauty….

Sarina climbs out of the truck, letting out a long sigh as she looks over at Rudy.

“I don’t even know what to say,” she offers before climbing the rest of the way out. “I tried everything that you told me, Logan told me, and whatever I did last year. I tried to make the moves that I was supposed to, but we went nowhere.” Rudy glances over his notes, before checking over the truck.

“Too tight or too loose now?” He questions, half-listening to her comments. He knew by finishing sixth in their heat that they’d have to run the last chance qualifier, which would be coming up shortly.

“I’m going to say too tight because I couldn’t slide as much as I did in practice.” Rudy nods his head as he glances back at his notes.

“They changed the track conditions slightly, and we’re getting more drivers running laps so that doesn’t surprise me.” He then looks back up at his driver. “I know you hate having to run the b-main, but look at it this way – you’re locked in the show no matter what you do, and it’s extra laps so you can get comfortable. Keep pushing, and you’ll figure it out.” She just nods her head as she runs her hands through her hair.

“How does Logan and Stewart (Frisen) and all those asses make it look so easy?”

“Because they’ve been running dirt all of their lives,” a new voice chimes in as she glances back over her shoulder, smiling. She walks over immediately, wrapping her arms around him for a hug. “Just like they’d find Winchester or Pennsacola challenging, you find this hard. But Rudy is right as you always figure it out.”

“I’ve missed you today,” she comments, before kissing Chase’s lips once again. “I’m glad that you made it here, though. How did today go?” He then takes a deep breath.

“Sample submitted. We’ll know the results on Friday when they’re delivered.” She then rubs his back a little as she could see the concern in his face.

“That’s it?” He nods his head as she lets out a sigh. She knew there was more, but she wasn’t about to push the issue.

“You know that you have to turn right to go left typically on dirt, right?” Another voice chimes in and she chuckles immediately, recognizing Ryan right away.

“Thanks Captain Obvious,” she replies, giving him a small smack as she keeps an arm wrapped around Chase. “Maybe I should just get you to drive instead.

“Woah now, I don’t have the experience even with how much racing my dad does over the year.”

“That’s surprising actually,” Chase comments as Ryan just shrugs his shoulders.

“I’ve always just stuck with pavement and stock cars,” Ryan offers.

While the boys were trading jabs, Sarina’s eyes caught Erin’s as she gives her a simple nod.

“It’s nice to see you Erin,” Sarina breaks the silence as they stare at each other. Even with both trying to ignore the kiss happened, it felt awkward to be standing there face-to-face.

“Same to you,” Erin replies. “It’s too bad that you couldn’t had joined the boys in Ireland.” Sarina silently wished she would’ve been there, too, as the kiss probably never would’ve happened.

“Maybe next time, right? I heard that you had a great time traveling across Europe…” Erin nods her head.

“I have to show you the photos some time because there’s so many beautiful spots.” Sarina just smiles back in response. “Look, it’s easy to see that things are awkward between us. I’m not going to deny to you the feelings that I shared to Chase that I have. I’m not going to deny the kiss that happened, nor will I deny that it made me think about what could’ve been. However, if he’s happy with you, then I’m willing to accept that as I think you’re pretty amazing. I’m ready to move forward, forget what happened, and just be friends.”

“I appreciate your honesty, actually. I have no issues with what happened because Chase told me the details, and I have no issues with your confession. I appreciate you giving us your blessing so to speak too, I guess. I also want you to know that I respect the friendship that you and Chase have. I get that he can come to you with things and talk like nothing – and that’s fine; it’s the same way with Christopher and I. If you guys continue that, I have no problem either.” Erin smiles as she holds out her hand, giving Sarina a hand-shake.

“I’m glad, and know that if you hurt him, I will be the first one ready to knock your ass out after his Momma.” She then squeezes Sarina’s hand a little tighter before letting go, and glancing down the pits. “I’ve got people to go catch-up with. See ya both later?” The boys nod their head simply as they watch her walk off.

“Well, that was interesting….” Sarina then pulls her ponytail out, fixing her hair before putting it back up again.

“Is everything okay, or did I miss something there?” Chase wonders as Sarina shrugs her shoulders.

“No matter what we say, Chase, it’s going to be awkward. You’re her first crush and yet you’re with me, but yet you guys kissed. We’re going to have that tension because we’ll always wonder what if and about the other person when we see each other; it’s like a reminder slap in the face. However, as we both said, we’re grown adults and ready to move forward. It’ll get easier with time, but for now, everything is alright.” She then wraps her arm back around Chase. “We just want to do the best for you, and be there for you. You deserve both of us supporting you through this time.”

“I appreciate that. I just don’t want to make things tougher on you.” She then glances into his eyes.

“Trust me, you’re not. Like I told her, I have no problem with the friendship you two have – as long as you’re okay with Christopher and I. We both love each other, want a future together, and have everything that we do have – but respect each other has a close friend of the opposite sex as well and that it’ll just be a friendship with them. Stop worrying. Let everyone else talk because it doesn’t matter what they say.” He nods his head, accepting.

However, witnessing the conversation and seeing how quickly Erin walked away couldn’t help but leave him a little nervous.

“That’s much better,” Chase comments as she crosses the finish line in second for the last chance qualifier.

He makes his way back down to the pits, taking her helmet from her as she climbs out of the truck. He gives it a quick wipe before placing it back in the truck. He then chuckles a little seeing the dirt on her back, wiping it off with his hand brushing across her ass in the process.

“Hey now,” She comments with a grin in his direction as he just gives her a wink. “One thing that can annoy me about dirt tracks – getting dirty.”

“I thought you didn’t mind getting a little dirty,” he replies as she glances over at him.

“With you, that’s a different story of course….” She gives him a wink to return the favor, before walking up to the hauler to debrief with Rudy before the main event.

The race didn’t start strongly for Sarina, as she ran outside of the top-20 most of the night, still trying to figure out the right approach for dirt racing. A decision from Rudy Fugle to not pit allowed her to stay out, moving up to 16th for the restart.

The final stretch would be deemed her best of the night as she avoided the late-race contact that took others out of contention, and even managed to figure out how to make a couple passes of her own. Ultimately, it paid off with an eighth-place finish.

“Not bad for someone who says dirt is their weakness,” Rudy comments, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “That’s how you persevere and survive. Look where you started the day, and now look where you finished. Days like these are what will win us a championship at the end of the year. I’m proud of you.”

“Thanks for sticking with me all day long,” she replies, easily returning the hug back in return. “Let’s get back to chasing wins, okay?” He nods his head in agreement.

“I have confidence in you at Pocono. Just keep a smart head on all-race long…” Rudy then walks away, set to pack up so they could get out of there.

“Nice job,” Chase says as he gives her a hug, placing a kiss on her cheek. “See, a little dirt never hurt anyone.” She then looks up into his eyes.

“Maybe if you’re good I’ll show you a different type of dirty later,” she offers with a grin as he just smiles back in return. “Or not. I mean, it’s all up to you.” She then glances down as the words slip out of her mouth.

“What’s wrong?” She slowly looks back up at him.

“I know you’ve got so much going on, and I know you expressed those regrets to me earlier this week. I just don’t know sometimes if I’m saying the right thing, or doing what you need me to do for you. Like, I don’t want to push you there if you’re not ready and confident based on what you said.” He appreciated the show of concern from her as it was one of the many reasons why he loved her.

“Listen, just keep being you. Just do your thing without any differences. I’ll tell you if I feel uncomfortable, or if you’ve gone over the line. But being here with me, there to lean on when I need you, that’s all I need. I love you.” He then places a kiss on her lips.

“I love you, too, Clyde…” She then takes his hand as they head off back to the transporter together.

“She stole your nickname for him?” Erin questions, earning a glance from Ryan.

“Still overcritical of their relationship?” Ryan offers back in response as Erin lets out a sigh.

“I can’t help it, Ryan. I want the best for him. Is that too wrong to ask?” He shakes his head no as he crosses his arms.

“He’s my best friend, too. I want the best as well and I have called him and her both out at times when I felt it wasn’t right. I just worry that you’re overcriticalness comes from a different plac-”

“I told you already that you didn’t need to worry, Ryan. If he’s happy, then I’m willing to accept it because that’s all I want at the end of the day for him.” She then walks away, knowing they’d just go around in circles, and that would probably continue from now on until she found the right guy for her.

Friday July 21, 2018 – New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Chase makes his way into the garage, giving various crew members a pat on the shoulder as he reaches the car.

“Practice starts in 15 minutes,” Jordan offers as he glances over at his driver. “Everything is there.” Chase nods his head as he glances into the car, seeing his helmet and gloves placed as normal. “So I heard you started therapy…”

“Is this going to be the topic of the day in the garage?” Chase questions as Jordan lets out a sigh, leaning over the roof.

“Alan made a brief mention when you weren’t there Monday afternoon for the rescheduled meeting.” Chase rolls his eyes, resisting the urge to go over and yell at the crew chief. He was hoping to keep that private. “For what it’s worth, everybody let it go easily, understandably, knowing everything that happened. They also saw you at the end of the trial, too.”

“So if it’s no big deal, why are you asking me about it?” Jordan makes his way around the car, leaning back against it as he looks over at his driver.

“Everybody else just heard about therapy and your feelings. I was there when you were getting the notes and saw your reactions. I was there when you told Alan what happened, and sat with you. I was there with you for the weeks af-”

“Jordan, I appreciate it a lot as it meant the worl-”

“I’m not looking for appreciation, man. I’m just saying that I know better than anyone else and coming from that angle, I’m glad that you’re doing it. I’m glad that you’re looking into ways to help you move forward and feel better about things. I hope it works out for you, or something else for that matter possibly. I also wanted to say that if you need someone to talk to, you can always come to me.” Chase takes a deep breath, glancing over at him.

“I know, and thank you.”

“William Clyde Elliott?” Everybody in the garage freezes at the full name mention, half expecting an elder family member to be standing there. Instead, jaw dropped around the stall as they saw the officer standing there.

“It’s Chase…” Chase states as he walks over slowly, taking a deep breath. His eyes were already locked on the envelope, knowing the information that it contained.

“I have a delivery for you from the Delaware Courts in relation to your case against Ms. Alison Reynolds.” Chase goes to snatch the envelope, but the officer holds it back. “We do need proof of identity and a signature first.”

“Seriously?” The officer slowly nods his head as Chase lets out a sigh. Instinctively, he holds up his hand as Alan throws him his hard card off the pit cart. “I don’t have anything else on me as I am here to do a job.”

“That’ll work.” The officer then hands him over a pen and paper, with Chase signing as instructed. “Thank you, sir.” He then hands over the envelope, before leaving the stall.

“Guys, just keep working as normal….” Everybody does as instructed, even if they kept glancing out of the corner of their eye at their driver, as he made his way to the pit box, setting the envelope there. “No opening it, got it?” Alan nods his head, accepting, but felt hesitant.

“We can hold off and let you ope-” Alan starts, and Chase shakes his head no.

“We have a job to do, and that’s figuring out what this car needs for qualifying,” he starts as he walks back over to the car. “Let’s focus on this practice, and then we can worry about that, okay?” Alan nods his head once again as he grabs his clipboard.

However, as the crew chief went to leave the garage stall, he couldn’t help but let his own eyes wander back to the envelope.

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 97: Pressure is a Privilege

“The pressure is really a privilege. … Those are things we embrace at the University of Georgia. We can’t run from those things.” – University of Georgia Bulldog Coach Kirby Smart, 7-17-2018

Tuesday July 17, 2018 – Dawsonville, Georgia

Sarina walks out onto the back porch, shutting the door behind her, as she walks over to where Chase stands, placing an arm around his shoulder.

After everything that took place on Monday, the pair flew up to Dawsonville, knowing that they needed some time to just decompress and relax a bit.

“You look like you have a lot on your mind,” she comments as he gives her a glance. “You know, you can talk to me about it.”

“I’ve got the closure that I need in knowing she’s locked away, but there’s so much else to think about,” he offers as she leans her head on his shoulder. “Just when I think that I am that much closer to moving forward, it feels like I get knocked back two steps.”

“A single therapy session isn’t going to cure everything all at once, Chase. It’s going to take time, patience, and working through everything. Like your dad convinced you, you’re taking the right steps…” Chase knew that as it seemed right in what he was doing, therapy-concerned. The first appointment on Monday had gone smoother than he envisioned, with the reassurance and topics already discussed feeling as though it was progress.

“…and I’m ready to take those steps, Sarina-”

“I didn’t say you weren’t, nor was I beginning to judge you. I have no place to judge you, Chase, considering my family, my background, and how I used to handle things. I was just stating that simple fact openly. I will also add that therapy can help as it solved my anger issues.” Chase glances over into her eyes.

“I haven’t seen any holes in my walls lately so I call that progress…” She then sighs as he lets out a little chuckle. She knew she wasn’t going to let that down no matter how she tried. “I am still doubting whether I made the right decision accepting the deal for Alison. I am still debating the paternity results tomorrow. I’m also pondering regrets, which I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it.”

“That’ll get easier with time as you find the answers you need…” He then takes a deep breath, as that comment opened a door to something he had wondered.

“Can I tell you something that was mentioned during therapy yesterday?” She nods her head.

“You can tell anything. I’m always here to listen, Chase…” He then glances down as he remembered the conversation.

“He asked me about how everything was affecting my daily life, and the changes that I wanted to see happen out of these sessions. I mentioned letting go of the regrets, finding comfort in the decisions made, but also the fact that I couldn’t fully open myself up to you in a sexual, romantic way as much as I felt I should because of what happened.” He then pauses, eyes catching hers again. “I hope you don’t mind me mentioning that, or you.”

“I’m glad to see you taking the steps to go to therapy, and I want to see you move forward beyond what happened. If speaking about me and our relationship helps you, then I don’t mind. I just want to see you be okay.” He then wraps an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close.

“I’m always okay when you’re with me.” He then gives her a small kiss. “He asked, though, how far we’ve gone since everything, and I said we’ve gone all the way – but something felt as though it was missing to me, whether passion, ability to just be vulnerable and show everything, or whatever. It pained me to feel that way, too, knowing that you’re always there for me…”

“Chase, I told you that I understand….” Chase nods his head, remembering the conversation.

“I hope you fully understand once I explain this, though.” She was now a little puzzled, but remained calm as she was to not deter him from mentioning it. “He mentioned that I may have dove in before I was truly ready after everything that happened for a reason. He said that I may have pushed myself to do that, in hopes that our time together would erase those images. I brought myself to do that with you, but yet comparing what happened to before, out of fear, and trying to create a distraction if you will.”

“That’s understandable based on what happ-”

“Even if essentially I was using you to try and overlap feelings and mask those to cure my own pain? Because the theory is that if we went ahead and did it, I could cover the images of what happened. But then my theory in that I couldn’t bring myself fully was because I was comparing and remembering, and not just being vulnerable to let it all out – both feeling what you were doing, and what I felt.” He then takes a deep breath. “I don’t even know if this is coming out right in how I’m trying to explain it, but I wanted to share it with you because I want to apologize for using yo-”

“Excuse me?” Her tone caught him a little off-guard.

“I used you to essentially mask everything that happened. I used you as my security blanket to cover every bit I was feeling. I apologize because that makes me feel terrible that I wasn’t honest with myself, with you, and especially in those moments that are supposed to be special to us.” Sarina places her hand on top of his.

“I understand what you’re saying fully, and I get where you’re coming from. But you don’t need to apologize, Chase. You never hurt me or mistreated me. I enjoyed every one of those moments because anytime I can be close to you, it means everything to me. My only hope is that everything you’re doing helps so we can get back to that place where you’re fully as comfortable as I am, and having none of these thoughts.” She then gives up, placing a light kiss on his cheek. “I love you, Clyde, and nothing will change that.”

“Not even Bell?” She then gives him a light smack.

“Morgan can keep that trouble maker…” He then chuckles a little. “You’re still coming to Eldora tomorrow night, right?” He nods his head.

“I’m flying up to Denver to do the test, and then flying to Eldora so I can cheer on my little dirt queen.” She then chuckles as she rolls her eyes.

“Dirt and I aren’t the best of friends, should you know…” Chase looks at her puzzled.

“You did a decent job last yea-”

“That was by luck!” Chase then laughs. “What? At least I’m honest…”

“Then maybe you should call Christopher and get some tips.” She lets out a sigh.

“Nah, he’s not as good at giving me tips as someone else.” Chase looks over.

“Like Kyle?” She shakes her head no. “Alright, who do I have to keep an eye on?”

“You. Your tips are always the best because they come from the heart..” He then gives her a mocked shocked expression. “Chessiest pick-up line?” He nods his head as they both laugh. “Please tell me you’re not going to Denver by yourself…..”

“No, Ryan and Erin are coming with me.” It was now Sarina’s turn to look surprised.

“Erin? She’s back from Ireland?” Chase nods his head, now nervous at the mention.

“She flies in early tomorrow morning actually. I hope you don’t mind that I asked Ryan, and he said that she wanted to come along for support…” Sarina bites her tongue as she couldn’t help but have a couple odd feelings considering what happened the last time the three of them were together – even if Chase was intoxicated in the process. However, she also knew that she could trust him and if Erin meant that much to be there, she wasn’t going to stand in her way.

“No, not at all. I’m actually glad because then it gives me comfort that you’re okay. Now I can focus on trying to sling some dirt…” He then pulls up his phone, loading a video, before handing it over.

“Watch this for motivation. I saw it this morning, and it’s stuck with me. Rather than running or dreading a situation, we should be blessed to have this chance….”

Wednesday July 18, 2018 – Eldora Raceway

Sarina just lets out a sigh as she leans back against the truck.

“Ah shit, why did I do that?” She immediately questions, standing up as she feels dirt all against the back of her.

It just added to the frustration of the day as the first practice hadn’t gone as planned – no surprise – ranked 15th quickest on the speed chart. She also didn’t feel totally comfortable in the truck, not sure if the handling was off or she wasn’t sliding it just enough. Seeing her teammate Logan Seavey at the top of the board made her feel more towards the second option, unfortunately.

Worst of all, she was wishing that she was in Denver right now with Chase, there to support him, knowing a whole tirade of emotions were probably filling his mind right now. It also didn’t help knowing that Erin was there, and her mind trying to play tricks in a multitude of scenarios that could happen.

“Hey,” she hears and puts on her best smile as Logan Seavey walks over. She knew to be polite to her new teammate, even if they were just working together for this race.

“Hey,” she replies as the smile remains on her face, still trying to brush off the dirt.

“Rookie mistake in leaning against the truck?” She lets out a small chuckle realizing how ridiculous she probably looked as she nods her head.

“I’m so used to doing that everywhere else. Frustrated, waiting to just go off on my thoughts to Rudy, leaned back against it. Look at this – you’re the rookie, yet I’m making the mistakes.”

“I take it you’re not a dirt girl?” She shakes her head no as he begins to help brush the dirt off. “There, it’s all gone – except your ass, but I’m going to be the gentleman here.” She then smiles a little as she keeps her eyes locked on him.

“I see you’re already pretty comfortable out there….” She then glances motions towards the board, before returning her eyes back to him. “Got any tips?”

“Keep pinching it more than you think you should as she’ll stick with the track conditions. Just about where you feel you’re over that edge, you’ll be right on the money.” She nods her head, accepting. That seemed like sound advice and went with her thoughts earlier.

“Thanks, I appreciate the tips.”

“Maybe later we can hang out a little…” She nods her head, easily accepting. For a first meeting, he didn’t seem like a bad guy and it was never bad to have a couple extra friends.

“I wouldn’t mind that at all. I may have to return the favor and give you a couple asphalt tips for a change if you get a chance.” She then sees Rudy heading over their way. “If you would excuse me right now, though, as Rudy and I need to go over stuff for second practice.”

“I better get back to my guys, anyway. Nice talking to you.” She then watches Logan head off, not noticing the boyish grin that had formed on the young man’s face in the process.

Wednesday July 18, 2018 – Delaware

Chase walks down the hall with Ryan and Erin toe, taking a deep breath in the process, as he reaches the desk.

“May I help you?” The secretary asks as Chase clears his throat. Why did he suddenly feel nervous?

“I am here with regards to a paternity test,” he answers as the secretary just continues to give him a dull glance.

“Name?” Second time in three days that he hadn’t been recognized. What was happening?

“Chase Elliott.” He watches her furiously type information into the computer, waiting a couple minutes.

“The paternity of Ms. Alison Reynolds’ baby, correct?” He nods his head. “Please head into Room B. A court officer will be in there shortly to take your DNA sample.”

“Thank you.” Chase then heads down the hall as the pair of Blaneys follow silently behind.

“What crawled up her ass and died?” Ryan asks, as Erin gives him a smack. “What? She seemed grouchy!”

“She was just being formal, which you need to be in this line of work,” Erin answers as they follow Chase into the room.

“A little politeness would be a change. You know a smile can do millions to brighten someone’s day.” Erin then flashes a smile at Ryan.

“How’s that, cheeky? Is your day made now?” Ryan then gives her a playful smack as Chase just rolls his eyes.

“Are you guys always like this?” He wonders, catching their attention.

“Chase, man, we’re sorry we’re not taking this seriously,” Ryan immediately apologizes as Erin places a hand on Chase’s shoulder.

“No, keep it coming; it’s a good distraction.” Ryan then looks over at Erin with a grin.

“Hear that? He gave me permission to smack you!” Chase then looks over shocked as Erin flips Ryan the bird. “You can go stick that where the sun don’t shine.”

“Momma wouldn’t be happy to hear your tone boy,” Erin retorts back as the door opens. The pair then fall silent as the officer sits before Chase.

“Formality is the name of the game and making sure everything is done by the book is important, “ the officer states. “Ms. Reynolds was taken into a room with an officer and doctor, who performed the sample testing as discussed in the courts. The officer then took the same directly from the doctor, got Ms. Reynolds to sign off, and then left the room. Therefore, we know the sample collected from the mother is without question. We do need to follow the same guidelines of procedure with the second sample. Do you understand so far?”

“Absolutely,” Chase states as he takes a calming deep breath, wishing those nerves would disappear.

“I need proof that you are who you identify as.” Chase was a little confused, but pulled out his wallet, dropping his driver’s license on the table and sliding it over to the officer. “Thank you.” The officer scans it using the scanner behind him, printing a copy immediately that goes in the small box he brought in. He then hands it back over. “Have you been through DNA sampling before?”

“No.”

“Trust me, this guy doesn’t go making random babies with random mommas just because he’s famous,” Ryan adds, earning a smack from Erin who tries to keep a straight face.

“Who are you?” The officer then asks, catching Ryan’s immediate attention as Chase just looks down at the table, shaking his head.

“Ryan Blaney, his best friend. I am just here for morale support. I apologize if my comment was out of lin-”

“You can be supportive by remaining quiet or else I will have to ask you to leave. We have an important procedure to follow and your jokes don’t help matters.” Chase would beg to differ as a nice light relief from the butterflies he was feeling. “We collect our DNA sample from the potential father via cheek swab. You will simply take the stick that I am going to hand you, swab the inside of your cheek before me, showing me as you do so, and hand directly back to me.”

“Understood,” Chase says as he keeps his eyes locked back on the officer. He then takes the stick, swabs the inside of his cheek as instructed, before handing it back over. He then watches as it placed in the box, and sealed.

“Thank you,” the officer states. “I am going to hand you a piece of paper, and you are going to sign, agreeing that the procedure was followed accordingly, along with agreeing to whatever results may surface.” Chase nods his head, doing so as requested.

“When do we get the results?”

“48 hours and we will have the resul-“ There was no way he was flying to Denver during race weekend.

“I’m scheduled to be in New Hampshire for a race. I will not be available to attend a court hearing to hear these results.” The officer nods, as he looks over the package.

“We can have an officer of the courts deliver you the results at New Hampshire Speedway directly if requested.” Chase nods his head, accepting. The only other option was to wait until next week and the longer they waited, the worse the feeling would probably get.

It wasn’t long after before they were headed out of the offices, set to the board the plane and fly up to Eldora.

“Are you okay?” Ryan asks as they reach the airport.

“I felt like I just went through the biggest exam of my life and I have no idea whether I failed or passed,” Chase answers as they walk across the tarmac. “I know it should just be procedure and we’re going to have proof that she’s playing me, but my mind still is playing tricks. What if?”

“You never made mention of there being a possibly that she’s telling the truth…” Erin offers as Chase glances back at her.

“Everything my gut says will tell you that she isn’t because I don’t remember her actually physically going that far, Erin. But I also have my doubts because what if I am blacking it out?” Ryan shakes his head knowing that couldn’t be true.

“You’re not the type to do that, though,” Ryan comments. “You always face every situation head on, and are the hardest judge on yourself because you find every single fault that you did wrong and ways to do better. You wouldn’t just forget or black that out. You’d be trying to find every fault in yourself for allowing it to happ-”

“But what if I blacked it out because I couldn’t handle that? I put off going to therapy forever. I could’ve blacked it out for the same reason.” Ryan understood the doubts, but wasn’t ready to buy into it at all.

“You put off therapy out of your own pride in thinking that you could handle it by yourself. This is totally different Chase….” Chase lets out a sigh as they reach the plane.

“Maybe I’m just over-reacting, maybe I’m just giving her the power that she doesn’t deserve to deceive me again. But until I have those results in my hand on Friday, I will not stop questioning it because there’s a chance.” He then unlocks the door, throwing his bag inside.

“How would there be a chance if they didn’t have sex?” Erin questions out loud as Ryan glances back at his sister.

“There isn’t because they didn’t have sex, or else he would’ve told us,” Ryan answers. “She’s still playing games with him….” Ryan then backs up, so Erin can enter the plane first, before following her inside.

“Regardless what it says, though, it’ll work out. You have us here for you, always.” Chase glances back at the pair with a small smile.

“Thank you for coming today,” he comments before placing on the headset. “Ready to go dirt tracking?”

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 96: Quaker State 400

Boy, no matter what we go through
You step up, I’ll step up too
It don’t matter what the haters say
As long as you are my boo
No matter how hard it gets
This love will have no regrets
As long as we’ll be
Stepping on the dance floor
It’s me and you

– Samantha Jade, STEP UP

Friday July 13, 2018 – Kentucky Speedway

Chase lets out a sigh as he leans back against the car, glancing up pit road.

“We could’ve been in the second round,” he comments, catching the attention of Alan and Sarina. “One less slip up off turn two, or a little harder into three was all that it’d take.”

“Frustrating, yes, but it’s progress,” Alan states as he glances up at the board seeing they’d start 15th tomorrow night. “Last month, we were begging to be in the top-20 with something to work with. Now, we’re wanting to be in the top-10. These small steps like this week by week, and we’ll get there.” Chase nods his head in agreement.

“I know you guys are working hard, and doing whatever you can. It also doesn’t hurt that I keep pulling everybody out of the shop, either.” Alan then takes a closer glance at his driver.

“Did you just really say that?” Sarina goes to say something, but Alan puts his hand up. “Don’t worry, I’m not losing my hearing right now. Regardless, Chase, we wouldn’t change anything. I wouldn’t want to spend my Mondays anywhere else than sitting in that court room supporting you, Sarina, and everything that happened. Recall, she took a shot at me, and recall she tried to blow the cre-”

“And I just let her off with-”

“It wasn’t your decision to do that solely. That was everybody around you saying that she was forced, and it added up. No regrets. Just focus on moving forward.” Chase wanted to simply agree, but regrets were why he couldn’t move forward.

“Try moving forward when the blame is on your shoulders, Alan. And before you start, I know I shouldn’t, but I can find many ways to feel it that way….” He then leaves pit road as Alan glances over at Sarina.

“He’ll figure it out….” Sarina nods her head in agreement.

“I just wish he’d stop beating himself up already,” she comments before hurrying off to catch up with him. “Are you okay?” He nods his head as they reach the motorcoach. “Just know I’m here, ready to listen, easy to talk to….”

“I know, and I appreciate that,” he replies, before giving her a kiss. “I’m going to go get changed and then we can figure out what to do tonight. Deal?” She then looks at him a little puzzled.

“Weren’t we going to watch the XFINITY race tonight?” He knew why she was asking, and was fine with it as he nods his head remembering.

“You choose the spot to watch from once I’m changed…”

Saturday July 14, 2018 – Dawsonville, Georgia

Quick shout out to Dawson PD for helping me break into my car instead of having to bust a window. May or may not have made the cut on #LivePD

After starting from 15th, Chase was able to work his way up into the top-10 through the first half of the race, but faded in the second half en route to finishing 13th. It wasn’t the most memorable night, but it was progress as Alan said as they were getting closer to where they wanted to be.

Landing in Charlotte that night, the pair were ready to retreat back to the house and enjoy a nice night of sleep, followed by a full day of relaxation. It was rare to find that in their schedule, so Sarina had set everything in motion to take full advantage.

“Do you have my keys?” Chase asks as they get off the airplane, making their way across the airport. Sarina shakes her head no as she glances through her bag quickly.

“You never give me your keys,” she answers as she looks back over confused. “I thought you put them on your key ring…” He twirls the airplane keys before her, which contained the key to the heart on the bracelet that she wore, but certainly didn’t contain the Tahoe key. “You always put them on your key ring, though….”

“I must’ve forgot, and I don’t see them anywhere.” He then takes his backpack off, going through it as he tries to find them. It wasn’t long before Sarina was following suit with her own backpack. “Please tell me you have your keys.”

“I left my keys at the house, figuring that you had yours.” He then looks up at her, rolling his eyes.

“Do you ever think of back-up plan?” She then lets out a sigh.

“I’m just used to the flow of you having the keys and taking care of business, especially when we’re coming back to your parents instead of going home.” Chase then puts the bag on his back, walking back towards the plane. “So because we don’t have the keys, we’re heading to Charlotte? Couldn’t we just call your Dad for a ride hom-”

“I’m going to see if l left them on the plane, obviously!” She then freezes, almost wanting to laugh at how stupid she sounded.

“Oh…” She watches as he walks away, turning around to glance inside of the Tahoe. She then caught the glimpse of something silver, shaking her head immediately. “Chase!!” It took less than 10 seconds after she screamed for him to appear at her side.

“What’s wrong?” She then points in the Tahoe, seeing his mood change immediately. “Are you kidding me?!?” She almost wanted to laugh, but bit her tongue instead knowing the frustration they were enduring.

“The only extra set is in Charlotte, so why don’t we just call your Dad now?” Chase shakes his head no as he looks at her with a devious grin. “Oh please, innocent Chase cannot know how to break into a car….”

“I may have some naughty secrets that you don’t know about.” Her jaw drops in surprise, though immediately turns into her giving him a smack as he breaks out laughing. “I almost had you.”

“So what’s your great plan now, smartass?” He then walks over to the parking lot, picking up a small rock. “Oh yeah, let’s bust a window with a rock because we don’t want to call Daddy for help.”

“Is there a problem here?” They hear in the distance as a flashlight is shined on them both.

“And now we’re probably off to jail because they’re going to think we’re stealing the car,” Sarina summarizes as Chase just rolls his eyes.

“I got this under control,” Chase states as he takes a calming deep breath watching the officer come into view. “I locked my keys in the car when I parked it here earlier this week. I was just trying to figure out a way to get them out.”

“Usually people call a tow truck company and prove ownership and they can help them out,” the officer states as he shines the light directly on Chase. “But yet here you’re holding a rock. Are you sure this is your vehicle?” Chase almost wanted to laugh.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure. You can check everything out…” He then goes to grab his wallet out of his pocket as the officer looks over at Sarina.

“May I ask if your name is Sarina Ott?” Sarina smiles and nods her head. “You race in the truck series for Kyle Busch, right?” She nods her head once again at the officer. “Wow, it’s great to meet you in person.”

“Um hello?” Sarina almost wanted to laugh at Chase getting overlooked.

“Have you met my fiancé Mr. Chase Elliott, better known as the hometown hero?” Sarina asks, wrapping an arm around Chase’s shoulders in the process as he just smiles at the officer.

“I can’t say that I recognize him,” the officer states, both of their jaws dropping in the process. “My family doesn’t follow much racing actually, and we just moved to town.”

“That’ll do it…” Chase comments as he glances over at Sarina. “Those around here would know who I am.”

“Okay superstar,” Sarina replies back before looking back over at the officer. “So how did you recognize me?” Chase was now also intrigued, too.

“My cousin Lesley was talking about how she looks up to some great females who are pushing boundaries in their worlds, and your name and face came up,” the officer explains as Sarina just smiles back in return.

“Well, I’m glad that I am inspiring your cousin Lesley. Now that we have that out of the way, I can assure you that my fiancé here is telling the truth about the Tahoe, hometown hero status, and whatever. I mean, that boy can’t lie to save his own life.” Chase then looks over a little surprised. “Maybe you can help us out…”

“I have the tools to get in the car….” The officer goes back to the police car, grabbing what he needed.

“You can thank me later, sweetheart,” Sarina comments as the officer unlocks the doors, grabbing the keys from inside and handing them over to Chase.

“Be careful next time with these,” the officer offers before beginning to walk away.

“Sir, I want to show my appreciation for your service and help tonight.” Sarina then takes her bag off, grabbing her gloves out, before taking them over and handing them to the officer. “Pass those on to your cousin, and tell her that the skies are the limit on her dreams so keep pushing against every person who says no.”

“Thank you, and have a nice night.” Sarina then walks back over to Chase with a smile as she puts her backpack in the car.

“You going to stand there shocked still, or are you going to drive me home?” Chase just shrugs it off as he climbs in, set to head off for the night.

“Mark that down in the you’d never believe this happened category,” he comments as they leave the airport.

Monday July 16, 2018

Chase makes his way into the hallway before the court room, holding hands with Sarina as he takes a deep breath. He couldn’t wait until he began his weeks in a different way.

“Mr. Elliott, it’s nice to see you,” the district attorney catches his attention as she walks over. “The defense was wondering if they could have a word with me and you about the status of the case. Normally in these situations that means that they’re looking for a ple-”

“And you really think Chase is going to just drop everything and let her get away with this?” Sarina cuts the attorney off as Chase glances over at her. “What? After everything that she put you through, along with others for that matter, she doesn’t deserve a single drop of leeway.”

“You’re right,” Chase offers before he looks back over to the attorney. “Isn’t that way we decided to go forth with pursuing the charges that she pled not guilty, too?” The district attorney simply nods her head yes.

“I could easily go see the defense and tell them that you wish to not meet under any circumstances,” the district attorney begins. “I don’t have a problem with that. However, being that I am representing the State, I should follow suit in at least listening to what they have to say to see if it’s in the state’s interest. At that point once they are heard, a decision can easily be made to continue as discussed, or for the course to be adjusted slightly.”

“Fine, I’ll accept the meeting.” Chase knew that he was probably going to get the runaround treatment for the rest of the day and weeks to come if he didn’t so he might as well do as requested. “I’ll be right back, okay?” Sarina nods, giving him a quick kiss.

He then follows the district attorney through the court room doors, where the defense lawyer was sitting at the small desk.

“Thank you for agreeing to this meeting,” the defense immediately says, shaking both of their hands. “I feel there’s a certain step that we need to take with regards to this case, and it all begins with something that you said last week, Mr. Elliott.” Chase crosses his arms, intrigued. “Crazy or not, it doesn’t matter to me. I just want her to pay for all the pain and hurt that she caused me, Sarina, Ryan, Alan, and others by what she did. If she’s crazy, then that’s great; get her the mental help that she needs.” The defense sits down the piece of paper. “Do you recall those words?”

“What’s your point?” Chase questions, already growing annoyed especially if this was a plea deal tactic.

“It is obvious to everybody that my client isn’t mentally sta-”

“We’re not here to argue that as we accepted her guilty due to insanity plea on a slew of charges already,” the district attorney cuts him off. “The only thing that we’re here to discuss are the current charges that lay before the courts.”

“My client is ready to plead guilty to those charges if it is agreed upon that she does not go to jail, but rather a place for the criminally insane to get help,” the defense offers. “You said it yourself, Mr. Elliott, that if she needed the help, then she should get it. It’s obvious that she is in a world where she doesn’t know real from not, and believes that you’re in love with her.” Chase knew that would be the easy way out as it’d end these countless meetings, and certainly his conscious wanted to see her get help if necessary. However, it still left questions unanswered in his mind.

“What happens when she is deemed healed per this facility, though?” Chase questions as he looks towards the district attorney.

“Depending on how the plea is written, she is either released back to society or has to go before a parole board,” the district attorney explains, bringing a tinge of fear to Chase. “I would only agree to such a situation upon the second notion due to the extreme measures that she went against you, and others, as she is a major risk to society.”

“I have no problem with those terms as my client does hold some regre-” the lawyer begins as Chase breaks into laughter.

“Oh really?” He questions. “That was so obvious when she was on the stand taunting everybody in the room. How about you just talk from your point of view and not hers because you’re not doing her any favors?” He then takes a calming deep breath, knowing his emotions were starting to get to him as he looks towards the district attorney. “What would happen before the parole board?”

“She would make her case that she was sane and set to return to society,” the district attorney begins. “At that time, victim impact statements would be brought in to understand the lengths that she went originally, including yourself. We would also bring in opinion from you as to whether you would feel comfortable, along with others affected; I can already tell based on your questions what your answer would be. Then based on everything, the parole board would determine whether to send her to jail to serve out partial or full sentence, to let her back in society under a watch scenario, or to let her free as if nothing happened.”

“I can’t take that chance of her being returned as if nothing happ-”

“Her actions were due to her insanity. Therefore if that is addressed, and who knows how long that would take, you may see a change and nothing to worry about. Furthermore, I highly doubt that she would be allowed due to the extent of charges and the fact she escaped custody a couple times.” Chase nods his head, willing to accept. Not having to worry about future trial dates would also be rewarding as he could actually begin to focus on the future.

“What about the baby? I’m not the father, but her pleading guilty to rape would mean it happened and I am. Are we still going to prove the paternity?” The district attorney then turns to the defense lawyer.

“We can still go forth with that appointment as scheduled for Wednesday,” the defense states. “Do we have a deal?” Chase takes a deep breath, nodding his head.

“I’m ready to move forward and put this behind me. Not being here every week will help. You have a deal.” Chase then leaves the room, satisfied with his decision.

He just hoped that it worked out as they discussed down the road and it didn’t become a regret like everything else right now.

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 95: Kentucky Speedway

Thursday July 12, 2018 – Kentucky Speedway

Sarina kicks her feet up, scrolling through photos on her phone.

“That’s not bad,” she comments out loud quietly, before looking at the next one. “This one is nice…” She then flips to the next photo, immediately making a disgusted face.

“I’m guessing that one is ugly?” Rudy questions, earning a glance from her as she nods her head. “I thought you’d be hanging out with Chase right now…”

“He’s doing an appearance for NAPA so I’m stuck here with you instead. Lucky me, huh?” Rudy just rolls his eyes as he looks away from his laptop at her.

“You can’t pick on me. I gave you a good handling truck all through practice, and with what I have before me, we should be good tonight.” She then looks over intrigued. “I bet that sounds a lot better than those photos you’re looking at.”

“I can’t complain when my crew chief tells me he is going to give me a truck that will win, now can I?” Rudy shakes his head no as he turns back to his notes.

“What are you even looking at to begin with, or do I want to know?” She then lets out a sigh as she kicks her feet up.

“Wedding photo ideas, actually.” Rudy now glances over surprised. “What? Did you think I was just going to stay engaged forever?”

“Based on what I know about you, wedding and commitment weren’t high on your list…” She then lets out a sigh as she looks back at her phone.

“That was before I met Chase, and saw what love was capable of. Now, I’m almost excited for it to be official and call myself Sarina Ott Elliott, or just Sarina Elliott.”

“If that’s all that matters, then let’s go pick the boy up and head down to city hall.” She then takes the small pillow that was beside her, chucking it at him as he laughs. “Besides, I can’t see you planning a wedding….”

“Hey now, I can be pretty just as much as I am tomboyish.” Rudy then shakes his head.

“So in other words, as we get closer to this supposed wedding, I should worry about having a panicking bride worried about the fine details, such as flower color and the invitations. Oh yeah, that’ll make great practice while we chase a championship. Say, when is this wedding?”

“January in Colorado.” Rudy’s jaw drops as he looks back over at her again. “What?”

“Don’t chew me out or anything, but Chase seems like the perfect family darling. I was ready for a Dawsonville wedding, or North Carolina wedding. But Colorado in the winter?”

“The cabin has been home to a lot of memorable, special moments, and it’s our place to just get away and be together without anybody judg-”

“…or wondering whether you’re with Christopher and he’s with Erin?” She slowly nods her head.

“Besides, his parents go to Colorado in the winter for some outdoor fun as Bill even came skidooing with us the one day. Everybody will be there and news flash, I think there’s enough room to invite you. And don’t worry, I won’t be one of those panicking brides. Yes, I have certain things that I would like to see for my wedding, but I’m not Bride-zilla.” Rudy then lets out a sigh of relief.

“So those images….” Sarina then glances back at her phone, before looking over at the crew chief.

“Flower ideas, dress idea, decoration idea. There are some that I saved when I first started thinking about it, along with suggestions from Samantha and Lindsay in stuff that they saw that may work.” Rudy then glances over to meet her eyes.

“And the groom?” She then smiles.

“He said that I can choose those finer details. He just wants to help in picking the venue, along with the guest list. As he put it, I’m his princess and he wants me spoiled.” Rudy couldn’t help but smile in response.

“It’s really nice to see you both so happy, and looking forward to something. I  know it hasn’t been an easy road, and there are still hurtles to figure out. Don’t ever forget how special you are, and how special he makes you feel. You deserve the happiness, but don’t take it for granted.”

“I know better than to do that, Rudy. Monday was the perfect reminder of that…” She then takes a deep breath, letting herself get lost back in the images as she didn’t want to think about Alison and give her the power that came with that thought.

Sarina climbs out of the truck, gives one glance over to Rudy, before walking over and giving the crew chief a high-five. Qualifying was in the books, and she’d be leading the field to the green flag later on that night.

“That’s what I’m talking about!” She says as Rudy just smiles back in response.

“I told you that I had something for you to work with,” he offers, before sharing high-fives with the rest of the team. “We just got to keep our heads down, keep focused on this truck, and keep doing what we’re doing. We may end up where you want to be at the end of the night.”

“I believe….”

“I believe in you both as well,” a new voice chimes in, bringing a smile to Sarina’s face immediately as she turns around to face Chase, giving him a hug.

“I missed you today,” she replies, kissing his lips.

“I missed you, too, but I heard Rudy has been taking good care of you.” She then glances over at the crew chief, before turning her eyes back to Chase.

“Not as well as you can take care of me, though….”

“I heard light colored flowers work well with a winter wedding landscape in a cabin,” Rudy offers before walking away, earning a confused glance on Chase’s face as Sarina rolls her eyes.

“Since when did Rudy become knowledgable about weddings?” Chase wonders as Sarina just just shakes her head.

“I don’t know,” she answers almost chuckling to herself. “But he caught me looking over ideas for our wedding.” Chase then looks at her surprised.

“So has the bride picked out a dress, yet?” Her jaw drops in shock.

“When have you known a bride to pick out a dress so far in advance like now before her wedding, Chase? Besides, I can’t pick any of that out before we decide on the venue, and then we need to decide on flowers. Once I know the surroundings, then I can pick the perfect dress.” He then puts his arms around her.

“Well I don’t care what you choose, I know you’re going to look beautiful when it’s time.” He then gives her another kiss on the lips, before letting her go so she could take her pole winning photos.

The race started out well, as she was fast through the beginning portion of the event. She finished second in the first stage after leading the initial laps, followed by winning the second stage.

“Loose wheel….” She says on the radio shortly after the final round of pit stops under caution in a tone that could only be defined as frustration. Here they were another weekend with a fast truck capable of winning, and here they were set to once again not be able to close the deal due to something happening.

“Come back in,” Rudy offers, which she follows instructions as requested. “Wheel spacer needed…”

The extra pit stop would force her to restart 18th, rather than inside of the top-five. With a fast handling No. 18 Toyota Tundra underneath her, she was able to make her way back through the field to score an eighth-place finish.

“Sorry,” was all Rudy could manage after the race as he gave her a hug. “The guys let you down. We’ll get ‘em next week.”

“Just got to keep trying and eventually the pieces will fall in place, right?” She questions and Rudy nods his head back in response before walking away. “I didn’t want to say it in front of Rudy, but I feel Kyle needs to fire half of this damn team because these pit stops the past couple of weeks have been awful!”

“Does it feel better to get that out of your system?” Chase questions and she nods her head.

“But am I right?” Chase was about to say something, but bit his tongue instead. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. We’re supposed to be the championship team, set to do what Bell did last year once again, and boom – we’re stuck with crappy pit stops. You don’t win races by messing up on pit road.”

“Kevin Harvick does….” She then smacks his shoulder. “Hey!”

“I just feel as though something is missing…” He then wraps an arm around her, pulling her close.

“You’re just getting frustrated because you think you should’ve won five races this year by now, and you’re probably right. Just take a deep breath, put everything in perspective, and push forward. These guys will figure it out before the playoffs.” She then looks at him, intrigued.

“You really believe that?” Chase nods his head. “I’ll try to listen, okay?”

“That’s my girl…..” They then head down pit road together. “On a brighter note, the old you would’ve freaked out on Rudy and the crew guy.”

“Maybe I need to do that…” Chase then stops suddenly, looking over at her. “Kidding, of course. Besides, you’re right. These are my guys and they’ve proven they can get the job done before. We’ll be fine…”

Friday July 13, 2018 – Kentucky Speedway

The first practice was in the books for the Cup Series, and all that it could be described was decent for Chase Elliott and company. There was speed in the NAPA Chevrolet and potential for a good run on Saturday night, but the piece of the puzzle that had been missing over the past couple of months still remained that way. They were closer, but without that touch of speed, the thought of winning wasn’t even on the radar yet. For now, a goal of scoring a solid top-10 was on the mind.

Though as he stood in the garage area, that wasn’t the thought that consumed his mind at that very moment. Instead, he was brought back to a familiar thought process that had clouded him throughout the past several months.

“Hey, are you okay?” Chase hears, not even looking back to glance over his shoulder as he could already tell who was standing there.

“Yeah,” Chase replies as he lets out a sigh. It was time to shift those thoughts back to the shelf so he could focus on the racecar. Those were thoughts that he could worry about next week and the coming days.

“It’s okay to admit when something is on your mind, Chase…” Chase finally glances over his shoulder to look at his dad.

“I know, but I can’t worr-”

“You’ll never move forward if you keep avoiding it.” Chase then crosses his arms, actually beginning to grow annoyed of this discussion. Wasn’t his decision on Wednesday supposed to quiet the critics?

“That’s why I made the appointment for next week. That’s why I’m beginning to do what I need to do. However, in this moment, that isn’t something I need to be worrying about. I have a racecar and a race team to focus on, Dad.” Bill lets out a sigh, having grown used to this response from Chase.

“That’s every bit important, but your health is more important than that….” Chase leans back against the pit box as he just shakes his head.

“Dad, can we please discuss something else for once? I’m doing what I can….” Bill places a hand on his shoulder.

“I know, but I can’t help but worry as your father. You do understand that, right?” Chase looks over and nods his head. “Like I told you, I’m proud that you took the step in admitting that you need the help, and making that appointment. I’m proud of how far you’ve come since you woke up freaking out about what happened. I’m proud of the strength that you’ve shown, as so many people wouldn’t had been able to do what you’ve done. But I can also see on the inside that it’s tearing you apart just as much…”

“Some days are worse than others. I can go through a day and not have a single thought about anything. Then the next day, it’s the only thing that consumes my mind. That’s how I knew I needed to do something because I can’t keep going through those days.” He then glances towards the ground, taking a deep breath. “Sarina was talking about the wedding yesterday, and the beginning stages of planning. I can’t wait for January for that moment, but then it made me realize something else. Everybody plans on a wedding, followed by their future together. That future includes children, and well, that’s something we’ve realized isn’t going to work how we thou-”

“There are options, though….” Chase nods his head, having heard that from so many people over and over. he was glad that there was options and knew he and Sarina would need to explore those, if need be. However, it still didn’t replace the feeling of an opportunity torn away.

“Everybody talks about the amazing feeling in watching their wife or girlfriend carry the baby for nine months, feeling it kick against them, the sensations that they feel during that experience. Just ask Ryan about Lindsay, or Kyle when he talks about everything he went through with Samantha. Kyle don’t get emotions, but that affected him. Is it wrong to feel like you’re being stolen of that experience?” Bill shakes his head no.

“So everything isn’t just about Alison in what you’re feeling….” Chase slowly looks up towards his father.

“But it always gets back to her though, right? Because while Sarina receives this news that she can’t carry a baby full term, Alison wants to prance around the fact that she’s my baby’s fath-”

“She’s lyi-”

“What if she isn’t?” Bill then looks at Chase confused.

“What are you trying to say, Chase?” Chase takes a slow deep breath, remembering the discussion with Alan.

“I trust every one of my instincts fully. I know what I believe in, and I fully believe that I remember everything that happened. I fully know to myself with my instincts that she didn’t conceive that baby. But when you’re going through these emotions, realizing that you’re trying to escape it every way possible but head on, you begin to wonder. What if I escaped that by blanking it out of my mind? What if that happened? There’s a small bit of self doubt that creeps in every once in awhile and I wonder…” Bill didn’t want to face the fact, but knew it was possible if Chase was bringing it up to him.

“What are you going to do if that is the news you receive?” Chase shakes his head.

“I don’t know. I’d like to say that I’d do the right thing and raise the baby as if it’s my own without a drop of doubt because it’s not the child’s fault, and it is a piece of me regardless. But, can I look at the baby and raise that child without thinking of everything Alison put me through? I don’t know, Dad…”

“I think for now, you should focus on what you know. You focus on what happened, and moving past beyond that. Think about the emotions that you’re feeling in regards to pain, and regret, and how to move forward in the best way that you can. I wouldn’t think about the baby until the news come down. Then once you have that news, then if it is what it is, then take your time to think about it.  You can’t control the unknowns, but control your future and what you know. You only got so long and you don’t know when your time is up…” Chase takes a deep breath.

“That’s what I’m trying to do. That’s why I made the phone call and the appointment because I want to take control of these emotions and my life. I’m done being her puppet and living a life controlled by how she manipulated me. I’m done dealing with her unknowns and the games.” Bill places a hand on his shoulder.

“That’s what I like to hear. And I know it won’t be easy, because there will be days where therapy may seem hard because of everything you’re dulging into. But remember that it’s worth it for you, and you will get through this. Your mom and I are always here for you…” Chase nods his head, accepting.

“Chase, second practice……if you’re ready,” Jordan Allen says as he walks by, placing the helmet on the roof with his gloves.

“Got to go to work,” Chase states as he gives his dad a hug before walking over to the car.

“Remember what I said…” Bill reminds him before leaving the garage, letting him focus.

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 94: “I need to do this for me…”

“We all had high hopes for Casey, and then everything changed almost overnight. It was tough for everybody. I talk to Chase about that a lot and remind him that you can’t take anything for granted, that you have to enjoy every moment as you go along. You don’t know how long you’ll have it.” – Bill Elliott, 2014.

Monday July 9, 2018 – Court Room

It took several minutes, but sipping on the cool water and surrounded by fans did the trick as Chase slowly calmed back down.

“I’m okay guys…” Chase then slowly stands up, as he takes a deep breath. “I’ll be fine. It’s just thinking about everything on the stand – it took me right back to that feeling.”

“Chase, are you still having nightmares?” Bill asks, with a side glance towards Sarina at the same time as he knew that she’d know the answer.

“They’re slowly getting to be less and less. Dad, I’ve got this under control. I’m working my way through it.” Bill crosses his arms, still not totally convinced. “Dad, please….”

“I just think that you should liste-”

“I’ve thought about what you said, what Alan said. Slowly facing the emotions and what happened is helping me. I’ve been fine until today when it was right there in my face. Once I’m done having to remind myself every waking moment of what happened, once I let go of those regrets, and once she is definitely locked away, I will be fine.” He then places a hand on Bill’s shoulder. “Trust me, please….”

“Just make sure you’re taking care of yourself, okay?” Chase nods his head accepting as Bill reluctantly lets him walk out of the court room with friends in toe.

It didn’t take long to get to the airport, and for everybody to board the plane headed back to North Carolina. Sarina immediately curled up with Chase in the back, letting him lay his head against her as she ran her fingers through his hair.

“I love you, always,” she tells him, giving him a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll be here for you, always, whenever you need me. We’ll get through this…” She then gives him another kiss as she smiles in seeing him relaxed, eyes closed.

Tuesday July 10, 2018 – Charlotte Motor Speedway

Sarina walks in the garage stall, seeing Chase standing there leaned up against the wall. She knew today was a busy day between testing and the announcement, but she was set to be there as necessary.

“Are you okay?” She asks, as she places a hand on his shoulder, catching his attention.

“If you’re talking about yesterday, that’s already in the rearview,” he answers. “I’m ready to focus on today.” With all the discussions about the upcoming roval event in September, he knew how crucial today’s test was to get to know the track and see where they stacked up. that’s why he wasn’t going to let anything distract him.

“Does that include giving me a clue about your throwback announcement?” Chase then smiles as he couldn’t wait to reveal the car to the world later on that day. It had been an idea that he had for awhile now, and it was great to finally get everything put together. He was just glad that everybody agreed, and supported the idea.

“You’re going to have to be surprised just like everybody else.” She then looks at him surprised.

“I thought you told me last night the important people know.” He nods his head, remembering how secretive he had been despite all the questions from everybody.

“The wrap department, PR department, NAPA executives, family, and a couple Hendrick executives. Alan hasn’t even seen it yet.” It was now time for her jaw to drop in surprise.

“I’m going to guess that it’s a tribute to your dad?” He then chuckles, knowing everybody was thinking that based on the tweets he had been getting all day already.

“Try again.” He then gives him a quick kiss before walking away, set to get in the car for the first run of the day.

The run on-track went smooth as he managed to keep all four tires on the tarmac, but that was easier said than done as he knew he had messed up in several different sections at times and almost pulled the same move that had gotten Darrell in trouble earlier.

“Is it supposed to be so challenging?” He questions Alan after the first run and the crew chief just chuckles.

“Everybody is in the same boat as I’ve heard that comment through the garage,” Alan offers as Chase just lets out a sigh.

“It’s going to be who can stay on the pavement the best because I will tell you right now – I am slipping everywhere. I figure out one section, and screw up the next. Please tell me that Jimmie has better feedback.” Alan could only laugh back in response as he went over the notes delivered to him by Jesse earlier. “Seriously?”

“It’s going to be a challenge, and you’re going to have to figure it out. Good luck, bud.” Alan then walks away still smiling as Chase can only roll his eyes.

The afternoon session would not start out smoothly, as Chase made a bigger mistake than he had anticipated making. He got into the chicane a little hard coming off the final turn, sliding through and getting in the grass a little. Thankfully, no damage to the car except for flat spotted tires.

“Sorry,” he comments as Alan just shrugs his shoulders.

“I’d rather you learn now than in September,” he replies as the crew change the tires. “Before that, you were running better than you had this morning.”

“I tried to get a little more than it would give me, just seeing where the limit was. But we still need to work on that balance as I’m fast through the slow section, but I feel we’re off in the fast section.” Alan crosses his arms.

“But what section matters more?” Chase then puts his hands up in the air.

“Hey, I’m just the driver…” Alan gives him a light smack. “Seriously, I don’t know. The key is staying on the track, and then figuring out the best areas to make up time. We should maybe give a try before we’re done today to see what it does for lap time.”

“I’m game if you’re game.” Alan then glances over his notes, before handing over a set of instructions to the crew guys.

They were able to get in a couple more runs, a little more confident based on what they were able to figure out. Now whether that’d result in having success in September, who knew as Chase still felt it would be a simple game of survival and there was more to figure out. Knowing that William and Alex would be collecting more data next week gave him confidence.

Though as he changed in the trailer out of his firesuit, he knew he couldn’t dwell on that any longer as he had to get back to Hendrick Motorsports. It was time to reveal his surprise.

“Can I get a hint, please?” Sarina asks as she stands back, leaning against the wall.

“Nope,” Chase answers, giving her another kiss before they head out together.

“Come on….”

Tuesday July 10, 2018 – Hendrick Motorsports

Sarina stood off to the side, smiling as Alan walked up alongside her.

“Has he told you what he is planning, yet?” Alan questions and Sarina shakes her head no. “Wow….”

“All he would tell me was it’s really special,” Sarina comments as Alan smiles.

The group then watch as Chase is introduced, along with both Bill and Ernie Elliott. Immediately, the gears begin turning in both of their minds as they try and figure out what paint scheme he had gone with.

“That is special…..” Sarina comments quietly as they reveal it will be one of Casey’s paint schemes, before revealing it.

“That looks really good,” Alan adds as he gives it a glance over from his perspective. “I like that a lot actually.” Sarina feels a couple of her own emotions begin to show, as Alan wraps an arm around her shoulders.

“We’ve talked about this a couple of times. He spoke of the stories that he heard from Bill, Ernie, others about what kind of guy Casey is, whether the pure sweetness or the fact that he was a little jokester. He told me how he wish he would’ve gotten the chance to know him, maybe been close cousins. He shared that with me when I was told him how I wish at times I was there for my brother, as maybe things would’ve been different.” Sarina then takes a deep breath as she glances over at Alan. “I still find myself wondering at times whether my decisions essentially wrote the route that he went dow-”

“Don’t hold that on your coincidence, Sarina. You did what you had to do for you at that tim-”

“I know, and I’ve come to grips with that. But I can’t deny that once in a while, say when I see a couple siblings bonding, that it makes me wonder. However, I also can say that I wouldn’t had changed a single thing. Those experiences shaped who I am today, and I like the person that I’ve grown into. I also know those events led me to meeting Chase, and then Kyle, and I wouldn’t change that. Heck, I even don’t regret meeting you…” Alan just chuckles a little.

“I may still hold some of those fights against you and Chase because dealing with him when he’s grumpy was a pain in the ass. However, I’d do everything all over again to see where you both are today together.” Sarina smiles as she looks over at Chase, flashing a signature smile as she catches his gaze in her direction.

“I just hope that we can truly move forward now….” Alan looks over at Chase, before glancing back at Sarina.

“He’ll find his way, Sarina. Trust me when I say that everything will be okay.” She nods her head, accepting.

The pair then quieted down, actually interested in hearing what everybody had to say about the paint scheme now that it was revealed.

It surprised Sarina a little when Chase said, “To be honest with you, I don’t care what anybody thinks. I’m pretty content with it myself and in our family, it’s a special thing to do, and whether a guy likes it or dislikes it, I think it’s cool and that’s what matters.”

“You can’t please everybody all at once, right?” Alan could only offer after his comment and Sarina nods her head in agreement. She had been getting used to hearing that considering comments were all over the place over the past year, and having grown used to ignoring and dealing with it, it was actually becoming easier to handle.

“Here’s the question – what do you think this car would like in victory lane?” The host asks as smiles fill the room.

“We gotta break that damn curse first,” Alan whispers as Sarina smacks him.

“There’s no damn curse as you guys are going to get a win – I guarantee that,” she replies.

“This would make for a sweet paint scheme for a first win,” Ernie comments, gaining their attention back. Alan could only let out a sigh as he wasn’t set to wait until September to get their first win.

“I think Chase is hoping to win before then…” Bill adds, earning a nod of agreement from both Alan and Sarina.

“Come on man…..” Chase comments, earning a couple chuckles from the crowd.

“Oh yeah, of course,” Ernie says. “But it’d look great in victory lane no matter what.”

The questions seemed to be never ending, though once they were done, Sarina still kept her distance until Chase came over to her.

“What do you think?” He asks as she looks into his eyes with a smile.

“It’s perfect,” she replies. “And I agree – waiting until you had the 9 makes it sweeter. Ernie is right – you’re a sweetheart for doing this.” She then gives him a hug, followed by a kiss on the cheek.

“I’m glad you like it….”

Chase then walks back away from her as he was called over to do some more one-on-one interviews.

“You’ve had some frustrating moments this season….” A reporter starts and Chase takes a deep breath.

“There is a heck a lot of more to life than where we are in the playoff standings right now, and this is one of those moments,” he replies.

“Understandable…” The reporter then walks away as Chase makes his way over to the car.

He leans over the roof of the car, watching as Bill and Ernie field a series of different interviews. He couldn’t help but eve-drop on what they were saying in the process, either.

“We all had high hopes for Casey, and then everything changed almost overnight. It was tough for everybody,” Bill tells one of the reporters. “I talk to Chase about that a lot and remind him that you can’t take anything for granted, that you have to enjoy every moment as you go along. You don’t know how long you’ll have it.”

Chase takes a deep breath as he glances back down, thinking over everything.

That advice was something that had always stuck with him through the years, and even if he began to lose sight, it was an easy reminder to look in the rearview and know it had meaning.

Rather than being focused on living in that moment, the past few months had been filled with something else, though. he had been stuck on flashbacks, nightmares, and panic over the actions of one individual. Rather than running his life the way he wanted, he was letting someone else control it – something that he even pushed against so much in his words to Sarina and others.

He knew he was taking the steps to move forward, but Monday was a reminder of just how much it still bothered him. There was still pain that left him feeling sick and disgusted beyond anything in what happened. There was still regrets in being the one to allow her to go forth with it, and carry it for as long as she did. There were regrets in the fact that she got a second chance to go after him, along with other thoughts that he couldn’t bring himself to touch.

“I can’t keep doing this to myself,” he says quietly as he takes a deep breath.

Right now, he was letting the pain and regret take the power to control his actions and his feelings. He was letting it stop him from sleeping and take over aspects of his life, rather than being the one to take control as he instilled to Sarina that she needed to do at times and do something.

If he was going to truly move forward, it was going to take action on his part and it was time to do that – rather than hold regret over that later on.

“Are you okay?” Bill asks, noticing the change in Chase’s demeanor as he walks over to him once done the interviews.

“Yeah,” Chase replies quietly as he takes a deep breath. “Remember when we were in the hauler at Bristol and you brought me a phone number to call?”.

“Dr. Dennis Hopkins?” Chase nods his head, not even realizing that was the name on the piece of paper. He just knew that it was a therapist that his dad suggested him getting in contact with that he had brought along with the pamphlets. “From those I’ve talked to, he comes highly recommended, Chase. He’s dealt with people who have been through similar experiences and had great results.”

“Do you still have the phone number?” Bill pulls out his phone, bringing it up and showing it to Chase. Chase then takes his phone out of his pocket, putting it in his phone.

“Are you going to give him a call?” Chase takes a deep breath as he stares the number before him.

“I am going to set up an appointment with him, and see where it goes.” He then glances up looking into his father’s eyes. “I can’t keep doing what I’m doing. I need to figure out how to deal with this, and if he can help me, I’m willing to try.” Bill places a hand on his shoulder.

“I’m proud of you. It takes a lot to admit when you need someone’s help. If you need someone to go with you, just let me know and I will co-”

“No, I need to do this alone and by myself. I need to do this for me…” Chase then pauses, glancing down. “I can’t do this any longer. It’s eating at me more than I probably even realize, and I can’t take it…”

“It’s going to be okay…” Bill then wraps an arm around him, pulling him into a hug as Chase lets a couple tears roll down his cheeks. “You’re going to figure out what works for you. I’m proud of you, always, and I know that you will be okay…”

The Tale of Love & Racing: Sarina’s Story – Chapter 93: Chase’s Story

Monday July 9, 2018 – Court Room

Chase makes his way into the court room just he had the week before, taking the same seat in the front row as he takes a deep breath. He smiles as he glances over to his side, looking down to see Sarina’s hand still firmly gripping on his left for support. He didn’t want to be nervous or panic, but the thought of discussing certain details still made his stomach flip flop.

As the same with the week prior, Bill sat once again to his right, glancing over at his son. He still wished that Chase had taken the advice of talking to a professional about what had happened, but appreciated the progress he made in those he had talked to thus far, as well as the strength displayed. He just hoped today went smoothly.

Cindy took her seat shortly after alongside Bill, with Kyle alongside Sarina. Alan and Jordan took their usual spot right behind Chase, along with Samantha, Ryan, and Lindsay. The support circle was there, set to do whatever it took for each other.

“Are you okay?” Bill finally breaks the silence as everybody bit their tongue, not knowing what to think in knowing Chase was supposed to take the stand today.

“Ready to get this over with,” Chase simply states as he takes a calming deep breath.

“All rise!” The court officer says, as everybody stands up. “Now presenting the honorable Judge Gus.” The judge enters, taking her spot as expected.

“Everybody may seated,” the judge states, and everyone sits down as instructed. The doors open and Alison enters, wrists bound together with handcuffs behind her back once again. As she comes in, Bill takes Chase’s right hand, offering his show of support as Chase just focuses his eyes back on the ground.

“Can’t wait to hear you tell the court how much you love me boo,” Alison says as she walks by.

“I’d rather puke on her instead,” Chase comments quietly, as he takes another deep breath.

“Just focus and it’ll be over before you know it,” Bill offers, as Chase nods his head, trying to let that sink in amongst the nerves.

“May the prosecution call their first witness to the stand,” Judge Gus requests.

“We would like to call Chase Elliott to the stand please,” the procsecuting lawyer states. Chase takes a deep breath as he slowly stands up, making his way out of the row, and up to the stand, taking his seat in the witness box.

“Do you swear to tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” The court officer asks as he holds a bible before him.

“Absolutely,” Chase replies as he keeps his eyes locked on Sarina and his father, not even taking a single glance towards his left to see Alison.

“With all due respect, we would like to move straight into the charges of in which Ms. Reynolds says she’s not guilty of,” the prosecution begins. “My client has suffered enough emotional trauma from the events that I don’t feel we need to repeat those events, even if they may be different than Ms. Reynolds recalled.”

“Shouldn’t we see what Mr. Elliott has to say in respect of how he will spin those in his favor?” The defense asks as Cindy resists the urge to break out laughing having already gotten in trouble last week.

“You can cover that when you cross-examine the witness,” Judge Gus offers, as Chase bites his tongue. He knew he could easily sit there and recount the details without any issues – or at least believed that right now, but could only wonder what would happen when the tables were turned.

“Mr. Elliott, can you please recall the events from March 16, 2018 at Auto Club Speedway in the state of California?” The prosecution asks as Chase takes a deep breath.

“I had retreated back to the team trailer following practice,” Chase starts as he tries to keep focused solely on the facts. “I was just about relaxed when I heard Alison’s voice, taunting me. She asked me about where Sarina was, and I told her that she was having a nice day with Brexton. She then gave me a choice – kiss her, or she’d make sure something happened. I wasn’t about to let something happen to them so I kissed her.” He then involuntarily wipes his lips, not wanting to remember the taste of her on him.

“Then what happened?” Chase takes a deep breath, knowing that wasn’t the end of it.

“She then came on to me more, ready to undress me as she began pulling at the zipper on my firesuit – until Alan Gustafson entered. That’s when while holding me down, she turned around and popped a shot off. I used the opportunity of her being turned away from me to grab her hand with the gun, pry it away from her while knocking her off of me. I then held her there until authorities were reached.” Alan takes his own deep breath, thanking his lucky stars once again for quick reflexes.

“Under any other circumstances, would’ve you have kissed her?” Chase shakes his head no immediately.

“There’s only one person that my lips will kiss, and that’s my fiancé.” Chase then smiles as he and Sarina lock eyes, and she blows him a silent kiss. Meanwhile, a chuckle could be heard from the other side of the room courtesy of Alison.

“Thank you. We understand that you had a plane crash down into the Daytona Beach waters in February that you were flying with Ryan Blaney on board. What can you say about that in relation to Ms. Reynolds?” Chase takes a deep breath, still upset that he dragged Ryan in the midst of this and he was stuck in that situation too. Though, he actually appreciated the company while looking for help.

“She sent me plans that showed she knew how to hijack a plane to the Hendrick Motorsports offices a month earlier. That was why we implemented a protocol to check things before every flight. Being that we were running behind, we forgot to do so that night.” Chase still regretted that as he was one for always sticking by the book and following procedure. The one time he forgot, and it almost cost him and his best friend their lives. That was a regret that no matter what could’ve be taken away, even if everybody convinced him of everything else otherwise.

“Evidence A1 – the letter that my client is speaking of.” The prosecuter then places the letter before the judge, which is then passed by the jury, before being filed back away. “Martinsville Speedway, April 2018. What happened there with Ms. Reynolds?”

“I had forgotten my phone in the trailer following practice. It was snowing, but I texted Alan on Sarina’s phone and he was still there so I was going to get it. As I made my way into the garage area, she had a rope that I didn’t see pulled out, and I tripped over it, falling right away. Like she did before, she came onto me, set to kiss me – possibly more I don’t know, though ran away when she heard a pair of voices calling my name in the distance. Those belonged to Jesse Saunders and Chad Knaus.” He couldn’t thank his lucky stars enough that those two were heading by then as he could only wonder what Alison would’ve done otherwise, given his vulnerable state with the amount of pain he was in.

“Evidence B1 – the rope in question, featuring the fingerprints of Ms. Reynolds as found by forensics.” The prosecutor then lays that out once again just like the letter. “Evidence B2 – the hospital report containing Mr. Elliott’s injury, which were severe bruising of the back due to the fall.” Ryan had to chuckle a little at the memory, remembering how Chase fell asleep on the floor that night due to being only spot he could get comfortable when they got back. “The next time you saw Ms. Reynolds that is in question was when she had kidnapped Ms. Ott, which she pled guilty to. When were you made aware that she took the engagement ring?” Chase swallows the lump that had begin to form in his throat.

“The fourth night she came to see me.” Sarina glances down at the ring, twirling it around as she takes a quiet deep breath.

“What did Ms. Reynolds say with regards to the ring?” Chase closes his eyes, almost wanting to punch himself once again for the wording that he used.

“She told me that Sarina didn’t need the ring anymore. I requested that she take the ring off and she told me that may happen if I behave, and kiss her like I mean it, and give her what she wants. So I did it, and she dropped the ring on the bed before leaving.” Sarina felt a couple of her own hot tears, shaking her head. For him to put himself in that situation over a piece of metal didn’t seem fair at all. It was just a ring; it could easily be replaced. But yet, he went and did that due to the meaning and now she was lost for words.

“Obviously you touched upon the situation briefly, but the last charge is the sexual assault charge. If you could please – and take your time doing so, tell the court what happened in detail over the course of that week.” Chase takes a deep breath as he lets his mind go back to then, fighting every urge to panic and cry right there.

“She kidnapped Sarina on Saturday while I was in a total different state racing. I got home on Sunday night after the race, just wanting to try and relax whatever way I could, but obviously unable to because of my feelings. I closed the door and I heard a female voice. I followed it, and then found Alison sitting on my couch in my living room.” His breath then hitches as he glances down, taking a couple deep breathes.

“Take your time, Chase….” Chase then slowly glances back up, as he tries to find his own footing.

“I demanded for information where Sarina was, saying that it was always between me and her. I just wanted Sarina to be okay; that’s all that mattered to me. She then said I could guarantee her safety by doing whatever she wanted me to do. She would show me video proof that Sarina was okay as long as I listened. If I didn’t, she would make sure that Sarina didn’t make it out alive. That was the deal, and she would come see me every day.” Chase then stops, shaking his head, feeling his own frustration and regret in not figuring out some plan sooner, and the fact that he kept it hidden for three days following until Alan and Jordan found him.

“What did she want you to do, Chase?” Sarina feels her stomach flip in hearing his confession as to what happened, as Kyle wraps an arm around her shoulders for support. Every drop of pain that he was feeling was all due to wanting to protect her, and that made her feel a weird sense of guilt she couldn’t understand.

“The first night, she pushed me back on the couch, kissing me on the lips as she ran her fingers underneath my shirt.” He then takes a deep breath. “The second night, she did the same thing, while rubbing her body against mine.” He then takes another deep breath, feeling the tears come to his eyes. “The third night, she took my shirt off, she took my pants off, and told me that I must meet her like that every single time. She then took her own her shirt and pants, pushing herself once again against me, moving against me as she pressed her lips against mine.” The tears were now slightly streaming down his cheeks as he takes a shaky deep breath.

“Baby….” Cindy says quietly as she feels her own tears forming in her eyes, having not heard a drop of the details before this as Bill wraps an arm around her shoulders. “I just want to jump up and hug him, Bill….”

“He’s going to be okay,” Bill whispers, hoping that his words were the truth but still filled with uncertainty.

“The fourth night, she repeated the same process once again – this time in a hotel room bed rather than the couch of my living room,” Chase states as he tries to calm himself down.

“Can you tell the courts why you were in a hotel room on that Wednesday night, please?” The prosecutor asks and Chase glances up, nodding his head.

“I had flown to Bristol, Tennessee with some close friends to be close to where she was kidnapped from as they wanted to talk to me there, as well as trying to find her myself.” Alan shakes his head as he remembered the question session with the detectives, and wanting to slap a couple of them for how stupid they sounded at parts.

“How did she find out your location?” Chase bit his tongue, once again filling with instant regret.

“I told her. I didn’t want to break the deal out of fear for Sarina’s safety.” Sarina took a deep breath, shaking her head in disgust one again. How was she supposed to now let this go in knowing how much he went through for her?

“Thursday morning, it is reported that you were found upset in the bathroom by Mr. Alan Gustafson and Mr. Jordan Allen….” Alan glances down, wishing he could erase that image out of his mind, but that was always etched there. He couldn’t believe how heartbroken Chase looked sitting there, as the disgust was so easily readable on his face.

“I threw my guts up every night after Alison was done with me because I was so sick and disgusted for letting her touch me like she did.” A chuckle could be heard from Alison, which could be interrupted of being proud of work or laughing at what she would believe in her sick mind as a cover-up.

“Mr. Gustafson reported everything to the police, and that was when a trap was set to find out where Ms. Reynolds was keeping Ms. Ott. Can you explain those events, please?” Chase felt a bit of pride in having manipulated Alison in giving him the information that he wanted this way, but it still didn’t erase everything else that he felt in the process.

“I set up a meeting with her. I told her that I’d go with her, do whatever she wanted – as long as she guaranteed Sarina’s safety and released her. Alison agreed to take me to where she had Sarina held. I was given a tracking device to hide in my jeans from the police department, and I went down to her vehicle. She blind-folded me, taking me to where she had been hiding Sarina.” Chase then pauses, taking a deep breath once again.

“Take your time….”

“Leaving me blind folded, she told me to strip down to my boxers – and I did because I knew Sarina was there due to hearing her voice, and I wasn’t taking chances. Besides, the cops were on their way. She then pushed me against the wall…..reached down my pants….she touched me…. Then that’s when the cops showed up and took shots, with her running out of the building.” A trail of tears run down Chase’s cheeks as he continues taking a series of deep breaths.

“Mr. Elliott, at anytime during your encounters with Ms. Reynolds, did you guys have sexual intercourse?” Chase shakes his head no, immediately.

“No, so there’s no possible way that she could be pregnant with my kid…” Chase closes his eyes, trying to slow the tears as they continue to run down his cheeks. He continues to convince himself to take deep breathes, feeling his stomach twirling at the same time.

“Your witness, although I would advise against cross examination due to the state of my client’s mind,” the prosecutor states, before taking her seat.

The defense lawyer then stands, making his way over as Chase opens his eyes, trying to show every bit of strength he had left.

“So Mr. Elliott, you gave Ms. Reynolds permission to sexually molest you based on what you’re saying,” the defense lawyer states, which played right into Chase’s own regrets that he had tried to escape from all this time. As he had told himself, there was no way escaping that he was one to consent to everything that happened.

“Only because she had kidnapped Sarina and I was willing to do whatever it took for her to be safe,” he repeats as Sarina tries to remain strong and focused on him, but the regret continues to eat at her as well.

“Consent is conse-”

“I was coerced, okay? Your client laid a threat on me mentally, which forced my hand. Who’s to say that she wouldn’t had done something to Sarina otherwise? I mean, you are saying that she’s crazy so would you trust your fiancé’s hands with someone like that without doing something to ensure a deal?” Alan and Bill glance at each other, sharing a nod. Perhaps there was more strength in there then they even realized.

“So do you believe that my client is crazy as she is stating as her defense?” Chase wanted to laugh in response, but held that back in fear of crossing the line. Then again, it wouldn’t matter considering.

“Crazy or not, it doesn’t matter to me. I just want to her to pay for all the pain and hurt that she caused me, Sarina, Ryan, Alan, and others by what she did. IF she’s crazy, then that’s great; get her the mental help that she needs. If she isn’t, then that’s great; send her to prison. Just please don’t let her enter my life ever again.” Chase then wipes the remaining tears out of his eyes, as he tries to focus on the strength that he had been showing, versus the mental breakdown that was set to occur behind that.

“This isn’t the first time that my client has been on trial with you…..”

“She said that she was forced into what she did due to Bethany, and given her history, I was bound to believe it. I gave her a second chance. Clearly, I made a big mistake.” There was another regret that would certainly hang on his conscious for awhile, too.

“Last week, my client detailed a very descriptive image of how she had sexual intercourse with you to conceive the child that she is currently cari-”

“We did not have sexual intercourse.” The defense lawyer crosses his arms.

“So what do you call everything that we heard from her?” Chase almost wanted to spit out the possibility of events that happened that he had blocked out, but wasn’t about to give Alison that satisfaction as every time that thought came to mind, so did denial and knowing that she was good at playing games.

“A fantasy, a dream, something other than reality. I don’t know, but it didn’t happen with me.” The lawyer nods his head as he walks back to his desk.

“So you’re absolutely certain that she isn’t carrying your child?” Chase lets out a long sigh. He absolutely hated talking about pregnancies as it was annoying in what Alison was trying to do, combined with Sarina’s inability to have a child of her own.

“No, she isn’t carrying my child.” The lawyer glances over his notes, before eying Chase.

“The prosecution stated that your mental state has been heavily affected based on the events that have happened. Given the trauma that you have suffered and how it is affecting you mentally, could you possibly have blacked out the details of a rape to not deal with the consequences?” Chase almost wanted to scream as it was like the lawyer could see inside of his head – which was impossible.

“Absolutely not. I know what happened each of those nights with Alison. No matter how hard I try to forget, I can’t erase those images from my mind. They’re etched forever, and if she went that far, trust me, I would know.” A smile of satisfaction appeared on Alison’s face with that emission.

“So if she’s found to be pregnant with your child, can we revis-”

“She’s not pregna-”

“But if we’re wrong and she is, can we revisit this?” Chase shakes his head.

“She’s not pregnant with my child!”

“Your honor, it’s a yes or no question….” Judge Gus then looks down at Chase.

“Yes or not – can we revisit this if you are found to be the father?” The judge questions sternly as Chase glances up.

“Sure, because I won’t be found the father,” Chase answers.

“Thank you,” the defense lawyer states. “You’ve proven what I needed out of your testimony. We’re done.”

“You may step down….” Judge Gus instructs and Chase just simply nods.

He then takes a couple careful steps away from the stand, swallowing every ill-feeling that he was facing as he tries to put on a strong face walking back to the row of benches.

“Court will reconvene next week for more testimony,” Judge Gus states. “Court adjourned!”

“I can’t do this…” Chase says out loud as he feels his legs get light underneath him, every bit of panic and sickness entering his thoughts all at once as the hot tears begin to fall down his cheeks once again.

“I got you,” Jordan states as he stands up first, wrapping both of his arms around him. “I got you, Chase….” Jordan then slowly pulls him over to the bench, getting him to sit down.

“Sip on this….” Alan says as he takes the cap off a bottle of water, handing it to him.

“I can’t do this….” Chase repeats once again. “I feel like I’m going to be sick….” As Jordan and Alan stay before him, Kyle grabs one of the garbage bins, bringing right over and placing it between the pair.

“Take deep breaths; close your eyes, count to 10, and sip on the water. Relax. It’s over; you’re going to be okay. They’re just memories. They can’t hurt you. She can’t hurt you anymore either as she’s locked away, Chase. Keep telling yourself that as you take the deep breaths and drink the water. Just relax and take it slow…..”

The Tale of Love & Racing – Chapter 92: Coke Zero Sugar 400

Thursday July 5, 2018 – Daytona International Speedway

“Cancelled,” Alan announces officially as they sit in the garage stall watching the rain fall from the sky. “That’s all she wrote. Least you were happy with the car.”

“We’ll be fine,” Chase states as he slowly stands up, glancing down at his foot.

“So are you going to finally admit that it’s sore?” Chase just glances over his shoulder at the crew chief who just grins. “I’m glad you listened earlier, by the way. I wasn’t actually going to call Cindy, but doing something once in a while to put a small smile on Sarina’s face – even just as small as that, try it sometime because it helps.”

“I don’t need relationship advice, even if I find ways to screw things up….” Alan was now confused as he stood up, walking over to his driver.

“What are you talking about?” Chase lets out a sigh as he knew this was only a matter of time.

“I kissed Erin while I was drunk in Ireland. I don’t even remember doing it, but I di-”

“Did you tell Sarina, yet?” Chase nods his head yes. “Well considering that she was concerned all over you earlier, I say that she took it well…”

“She was angry and a little upset, but she let it go understanding the circumstances. The problem is a photographer caught it and despite Erin’s attempts, an article will be published Monday with that image.” Alan knew what that meant immediately, already having seen some of the stuff that had emerged over the past couple of weeks. “But article or not, I screwed up, right?”

“You made an innocent drunken mistake. At least you kissed someone you knew and not a stranger, if that makes you feel better.” Chase shakes his head. “Don’t beat yourself up. We all mistakes. It’s not about the mistake we made, but how we handle that mistake. You talked to Sarina, and she is willing to let it go. Now weather this storm and everything will be fine….” Alan gives him a pat on the shoulder before letting him go.

Chase then makes his way out of the garage stall, opening the umbrella as he begins the trek through the garage area. While it was a longer walk than he would’ve wanted given how he was feeling, it was actually peaceful listening to the drops against the umbrella as he ran everything through his mind.

From Erin and the discussion of feelings there, to the kiss, to the forth coming article, there was enough under that lone section to keep him occupied for awhile.

However, he couldn’t ignore the thoughts of Alison that figured into his mind, as he pondered everything she said on Monday – games or not – and how that figured into what happened, including the repetitive baby question. He also knew that he was supposed to be on the stand on Monday, and that was certainly going to be a pleasant experience. Who wanted to be the one to recount all of the details?

Though his mind also centered back around Sarina, and their relationship together. While everything began with her putting him through a ringer of things, it seemed it’d been role reversal over the past year. Under previous circumstances, she would’ve ran kicking and screaming, letting everyone bear the heat of her anger. However, she had taken it much calmer that he had predicted, and it was welcoming. He appreciated how caring she was with him, and wished with everything at times that he could change the news they got Monday together.

Every thought of her also reminded him that it was worth asking her to marry him, because he couldn’t see himself with anybody different. Their love was pure, and he couldn’t wait to see where it took them next together.

He makes his way back to the motorcoach, making his way inside as Sarina glances over at him surprised.

“Did you walk your ass all the way back to the motorcoach from the garage?” She asks as he puts the umbrella down.

“I needed some time to think,” he offers as he places it outside to dry off, before closing the door behind him.

“Are you okay?” He nods his head as he makes his way over to where she was sitting up on the couch now. “You know, you can tell me whatever is on your mind if you need someone to talk to.’

“I know, and if I needed someone to talk to, trust me, I would tell you whatever. But I’m okay.” He then leans in and kisses her lips. “I actually cleared my mind more than I thought I would.”

“That’s all nice and great, but there’s something you’re forgetting….” He then lets out a sigh as he knew there was going immediately. “You are supposed to be taking it easy on your ankle. Instead, you’re prancing through the entire garage.”

“I’m fi-”

“You need to go lay down, and get that foot up on a pillow with some ice.” She then tugs on his firesuit. “You need to get out of this first…”

“I may need some help with that…” Considering his admission to her before about partially holding back at times due to everything, she was surprised by how forth coming this was appearing.

“I can help you in any way possible, Chase…” She then stands up to reach his level, their lips immediately clashing together. They slowly make their way towards the back of the motorcoach, reaching the kitchen portion of the motorcoach, before Sarina pushes him back against the wall.

“Sarina….” Her lips find his again, followed by leaving a trail of kisses along his chin.

“I can’t help it…” He wasn’t about to deny it as he lifted his head up, allowing the kisses to continue down his neck. Though as she reaches where the mark was previously left from Alison, she slows a little. “It’s almost gone…”

“Thankfully…” She then continues the kisses as she loosens the strap around the neck of the firesuit. “You’re supposed to be taking car-”

“Oh I’m certainly taking care of you.” He then laughs as he wraps his arms around her, picking her up in his arms as she immediately wraps her legs around him.

“I know, but you’re supposed to be careful on a foot, remember? Relax, I got this…” He then carries her to the back of the motorcoach, laying her down slowly on the bed, as he climbs on top of her.

“This is more comfortable anyway…” She then gives him a small tug, letting her lips find his again while pulling the zipper down on the firesuit.

Friday July 6, 2018 – Daytona International Speedway

“So where do you start tonight, anyway?” Alex asks as they walk up pit road together.

The first round of Cup qualifying had gone well so far for Hendrick Motorsports, with three of the four in the top-12 to move onto the second round. There were even higher hopes surrounding Chase as he had posted the quickest speed in the first round, too.

“11th, he answers Alex, speaking of the XFINITY Series race, which saw qualifying get rained out.

“So you’ll be leading by Lap 10?” Jimmie questions and Chase just laughs back in response. “What did you do to your ankle anyway? No matter who I’ve asked, they won’t tell me.”

“Fooling around in the pool.” Jimmie just lets out an aggravated sigh.

“Did you ask Ryan yet?” Alex wonders and Jimmie shakes his head no. “That’s the problem.”

“I just don’t get why this guy won’t admit to us how he did it,” Jimmie starts. “I mean, we’ve all done something stupid one time or another…” Alex then throws his hands up in the air immediately.

“Hey, I’m innocent!” Both Jimmie and Chase laugh back in response.

“I bet Emily would say different,” Chase comments. “Ryan and I were a little drunk, and decided to have a diving contest into the pool. I slipped a little running to the pool, turned my foot the wrong way as I fell in.”

“Ouch,” Alex says as Jimmie just shakes his head.

“Classic,” Jimmie adds. “Everybody knows my dumb stunt – surfing on top of the golf kart.”

“I still can’t believe that Jeff cut his head open at your bachelor party,” Chase comments as Jimmie chuckles a little remembering that. “How’d that happen anyway?”

“We were comparing dance moves, and he tried to show us all up. Oh he did a great job at that…” Jimmie shakes his head as he chuckles a little more. “But I swear, I didn’t say go ahead and break dance on the table.”

“Are you sure the tequila didn’t make you say otherwise?” Jimmie laughs a little more.

“So Jeff cuts his head at Jimmie’s bachelor party, and Dale had a cut after Ricky’s party,” Alex starts. “Chase, we know what we need to do….”

“No getting drunk at their parties and doing stupid shit?” Chase questions and Alex nods his head.

“Oh you just wait boy,” Jimmie offers. “There’s a reason why Dale and I want to plan your bachelor party.” Chase knew that was probably not going to happen as Ryan and Darrell had already snagged all rights to that, thankfully – or maybe not.

“My wedding better not turn into the Hangover Winter Edition.” Jimmie and Alex just chuckle together.

Sarina glances over a couple of the crew member’s shoulders, watching the live timing and scoring closely, fingers crossed.

“Come on baby….” She says quietly as he came off of turn four.

“Pole!!” Jordan and Josh say excitedly together with a high-five, before both turning around to hug Sarina.

“Great job boys!” She says to them, before going through the whole team with high-fives.

Once Chase pulled back on pit road, she stood back as she watched the various team members trade hugs with him, followed by the media interviews. He then makes his way over to her, leaning in for a kiss.

“I’ve been waiting for that,” he says with a smile.

“I didn’t want to interrupt you,” she replies as he places his hands on her hips, holding her cloes.

“You can interrupt whenever you want.” She then smiles back in return.

“I love you, and spectacular job. Those boys built you one helluva car!” He then glances back over at the guys, before looking towards her.

“I’m not going to argue with you.”

Sarina sat on the pit box nervously, reminding herself to take the odd deep breath every once in awhile as she watched the drama unfold before her.

Starting from 11th, Chase broke into the top-eight immediately, and remained in the top-10 throughout the first two stages of the event. From what she could see, he had a good car and could make the moves he needed, but for now was biding his time and waiting for the lines to work in his favor.

With 40 to go, it was time to go and that showed as he broke into the top-five. Her legs began tapping a bit as she waited for him to make his next move, followed by a big sigh of relief in watching the first big wreck happen with 20 laps to go behind him. That sigh grew larger when the second wreck took place eight laps later, once again behind him.

“We can do this,” she comments quietly to herself as Chase ran third.

“All of the sudden, the power steering is not working,” she then hears Chase over the radio under the yellow flag. “We’re also running – 260.”

“Do whatever you feel is right,” Chad Norris instructs as Sarina just shakes her head.

“Something feels off. Coming in….” Chase then makes his way down pit road and all Sarina can do his shake her head, trying to avoid cursing up a storm while sitting there looking on disgusted.

“Broken oil pump belt. We’re done…”

“Shit!” Sarina finally lets out as she just sits back on the box, shaking her head.

Despite how nervous she was, she was excited for those final laps to play out as she knew with the position he was in, they could’ve challenged – and possibly won.

“That sucks,” she comments as she rubs his shoulders later on that night.

“Sometimes it’s just not your night,” Chase replies as he leans back in her arms. “Move on and try again tomorrow…..”

Saturday July 7, 2018 – Daytona International Speedway

Sarina could only let out a very long sigh as she made her way through the garage area.

Just like last night, the race started out promising with Chase pacing the field around the speedway, and running up front. Just like last night, he appeared to have a car that he could make the moves to win when the time came. But also like last night, the night had ended early.

An ill-timed move from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. resulted in contact, causing William Byron to go around. Being up front, nobody had anywhere to go, and that included Chase who got caught up right in the middle with heavy rear-end damage.

“Are you okay?” She asks as he comes out of the care center, and he simply nods his head. “Ricky was driving like a dick tonight from Lap 1 until now. He’s been pissing everybody off. I hope he wrecks before this is over.”

“It’s just a product of restric-” Chase starts.

“No, it’s a product of a dickhead!” Chase then looks at her surprised. “I’m not kidding, Chase. Just go ask my boss if you need confirmation.”

“I saw Kyle in there and he didn’t look happy so I’ll pass.” He then wraps an arm around her. “The main thing is that everybody is okay, and we have tomorrow to ourselves to spend on the beach and enjoy the sun.”

“Beachbums?” He nods his head as she lays her head on his shoulder. “I don’t care what we’re doing, as long as we’re together.”

“The feeling is mutual….”

Monday July 9, 2018 – Court House

“Are you okay?” Ryan asks as he walks over, folding a piece of paper in hand.

“I just have to go and say what happened, right?” Chase questions back and Ryan simply nods his head. “You have the article…..”

“It’d probably be best if you just read this late-” Chase snatches it from Ryan’s fingers as Ryan lets out a sigh. “Or not…..” Chase unfolds the paper, and begins reading the article, which showed the image in all its glory.

“Do I want to know?” Sarina asks as she walks over and Ryan shakes his head no.

“As released originally by the Irish Times, Chase Elliott was seen sharing a kiss with Erin Blaney, the sister of his best friend and vacation partner Ryan Blaney,” Chase reads out loud as Sarina just crosses her arms. “According to a quote obtained from Ms. Blaney, the kiss did not mean anything between the pair, but rather was a case of intoxication mistake as the group had been drinking while taking a tour of a pub earlier in the day.  The pair remain best friends, nothing more, according to her, with the incident already in the past.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad….” Ryan almost wanted to laugh as his eyes never left Chase.

“It gets better,” Ryan offers, earning a curious glance from Sarina.

“This incident took place at the same time as a previous reported encounter between Sarina Ott and ex-teammate Christopher bell in the Iowa garage area,” Chase continues reading, as Sarina eyes turn to slits of anger. “As noted at the time, the pair spent several minutes talking, before sharing a hug. It wasn’t also their first time spotted together in the garage, as there were rumors last year about them being together. Speculation was fueled then on whether Ott was turning to Bell for comfort due to Elliott’s situation with Ms. Reynolds….”

“….and of course they detail the court case in full of what they’re allowed to so far….”

“So essentially, they basically feel that I’m turning to Erin, you’re turning to Christopher – all because of Alison, and there may be more to my situation with Alison that is fueling this.” Chase then folds the paper back up, handing it back to Ryan. “Speculation, just as I thought would happen.”

“Can I kill them?” Sarina asks and Chase laughs while shaking his head no.

“Then you’d have to share a jail cell with Alison,” Chase comments as Sarina just shrugs her shoulders.

“I could kill her, too…” Chase and Ryan then both look on shocked. “Geez, I’m kidding. I’d never do that. I could never be locked in a cell away from this cutie…” She then places a hand on Chase’s. “But they are rats for what they wrote.”

“That’s their job, though. That’s what gets them reads, and publicity and everything they need. And what are we going to do in return?” Sarina just smiles.

“Continuing living our lives as if nothing changed and not give them the satisfaction they want. I love you, you love me, and we know where we both stand. That’s all that matters.” She then kisses his lips, lightly. “I love you, Clyde, and I’m here for you today, and always. We’re going to get through whatever they throw at you….”
